Linux Steam Client Beta Applications now open

For those that haven't noticed:

- TF2 is installable now and works, although it doesn't finish launching on my laptop with intel gfx, but many online report it working.
- For today only, Serious Sam 3 is on 75% discount, grabbed deluxe edition for like R114 via paypal.

Start steam with:
steam steam://store

Now you will be able to install TF2. Busy installing, will report back how gameplay is.

I also managed to finally copy my Linux over from my laptop to my gaming pc (was too lazy to do a clean install and set everything up from scratch).

My experience thus far:
- T'was a mission to get my monitor to the correct resolution and refresh-rate which were detected incorrectly.
- Sound somehow preferred the sound on my graphics card and onboard over my Auzentech X-Fi Prelude, highly annoying.
- TF2 starts up, shows a logo then crash.
- Serious Sam 3 worked at least, with no sound for now, and ran in widescreen mode on my 4:3 monitor, except at the bottom instead of the middle, mildly annoying but my own fault for not having upgraded my monitor in 5 years, still running one of the original LCD monitors from LG.

Other that those, I am quite surprised at how good Steam works thus far in the Beta, and I am sure many of these will be sorted out, except for the sound/res-refreshrate issues which are more Linux specific, although in my opinion will prevent some gamers from moving over to Linux.

Got my official beta invite last night... either I'm far behind everyone else, or I just got lucky. I'm hoping its the latter :D

EDIT: I see that there was an large increase in the number of beta participants, so many people got invites. And here I thought I was special... :( But anyway, that mans there should be others here who also got the official invite then...

I also got my invite, but I'm away from home till next week Monday, so it'll have to wait, not that it makes a difference, I already have Steam installed and TF2 running.

bloody hell didn't realise this was ubuntu focused. bit disappointing that.

Using Fedora as my primary, I was too. But it wasn't too difficult to get past. I managed to get it working eventually after trying on my own, the working part came from this post somewhere on the interwebs...

They want advanced Linux users but only list Ubuntu, Mint and Fedora as their choices... Why not just a general "source based distro/rolling release distro" that would include Gentoo, Arch, Slackware, etc.
:(

Manjaro has steam and Manjaro being based on Arch I suspect it would work on Arch as well, might even be in the AUR.

Eh, https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/steam/

I'm on vacation but I just cannot find the time to test out my beta account, can you believe it!

I'm halting everything NOW and trying it out...

EDIT:
Well, I have to reinstall everything. The new "beta" has a beta tag that my older installation does not have.

SIGH...

Hmmm that's interesting, I wonder if they've changed it much compared to the one I have...
Steam probably knows full well that people have figured out how to use steam outside of the closed beta. Hope they don't lock us out...

I'm now in Ubuntu 12.04 and ready to give this a whirl!

Edit: Arrrggggh! Pulseaudio, really? We're still dealing with this crap?

If this was 3 years ago I would be so stoked, but I'm back on windows...

Yes. Uninstall that crap.

Meh, I fixed it by flexing my sudo muscles once more. Since I'm not going to be running Linux alongside 8 forever, I don't really need to dabble that deeply to fix all its eccentricities. I did figure out that split file copying issue, though, that was fun.

I'm struggling to download Team Fortress 2, it sits for ages "Creating local game cache files..." and then pops up the message "The Steam servers are currently too busy to handle your request. Please try again in a few minutes."

Anyone else seeing this?

Should I be downloading Team Fortress 2 Beta instead?
