Have ordered the basic package. Just wondering if anyone's attempted configuring the MyWireless modem on a Linux machine?

Any idea what connection protocol is used? Is it "PPoE" or something similar? Can the windows users give a bit of info? Does the device look like a "network adapter" in windows? Any details it divulges?

Actualy, bugger that useless thread.

Configuring it with the Ethernet and PPPoE would be reletivly trivial with some understanding of PPP in Linux.

The USB device would be different though.

Does anyone know how to use the USB device under Linux?

The point behind a forum is to post topics, and receive responses.
Chastising me for wasting 200 bytes in a post is not helpful.

The point behind an FAQ is to list frequently asked questions, and be a knowledge base.

Perhaps we should start an FAQ thread so that these things can be listed with common knowledge gleaned from the discussions, and sticky it at the top.

Also, I asked if anyone has actually attempted it under Linux, which I'm taking by the response, and the other thread, no-one has yet...

As of yet, there is no evidence that it will actually look like a PPPoE device, even with the ethernet cable, or for that matter that Roaring Penguin's ppoe client will work with it...

From what I've been able to figure is that the signup process, and authentication process might be quite proprietary, which could spell bad news for Linux attempts.

Some good news would be for example, if someone that has used it on ethernet, with WindowsXP, has detected the modem on their network as a PPPoE device. If windows XP out of the box will see it, then chances are good it will work with standard authentication and discovery protocols over ethernet.

I don't have much hope for USB support under Linux, so I'm pretty much prepared to go have to buy the Ethernet cable. The question is, does it really appear like stock PPPoE device?

Hi rodent,

I dont know if this helps, but I should show you what the install CD process looks like, basically it asks you if you have USB, PCMCIA(i think) or network device.

so i am only assuming that it means you plug the thing on the network, but i dont know if that is PPPoE since i know to little about the topic.

I just know what hte installation process asks you.
I will show you tonight over IRC what it looks like, mkay?

This question should be answered as soon as I get my Ethernet cable. I want to hook the sucker up to my 2nd NIC in my linux box. Will keep you posted.

Hi,

PPPoE is PPP over Ethernet.

What I did to use it:
- one time Linux firewall
- one NIC for my internal LAN
- add another NIC. Do not configure it with any IP address
details. Just make sure that you can do: "ifconfig eth1"
... drive over to fastcomm and buy the ethernet cable...
- download a PPPoE implementation. I use:
http://www.roaringpenguin.com/products/rp-pppoe/index.php
- compile and install it.
- run adsl-setup and answer all the questions
- switch the modem off
- connect ethernet cable
- switch modem on
- run adsl-start
- start browsing... ;-)

Well, the USB interface is unsupported under Linux, it doesn't conform to the CDC ACM standard so the standard "modem" modules won't see it.

I've not tried serial emulation yet, but I've managed to sniff the USB data being sent to the modem using usbsnoop on Windows, and the actual RAW devices responds like a normal modem, with ATZ (Hayes compatible) commands.

So there should be hope for getting it going with some hackage. I'll see if I can figure out their proprietary transfer protocol which seems to have been developed by a crowd call MCCI (www.mcci.com)

Sounds like Ethernet might just really be the easiest way to go.

Hey Harth, LTNS. Yep still playing the occasional game, but waiting for Tribes: Vengeance due October this year.

It's looking really good from screenshots and discussions so far ...
