I went to Windows 8 because Linux only offered sync via Thunderbird+Lightning+Funambol cloud or Evolution+Syncevolution+Funambol. As my internet service is unreliable over 3.5G, I needed a USB cable. To sync contacts, notes, tasks and calendar. Media files and docs not important as I can do those as mass storage anyhow.

Phones in use are iPhone 5, Nokia E63 and C6.

Another Windows 8 issue is not being able to set up a wifi hotspot, not even with the bundled app. My son and I sat for two hours last night and didn't get it right; even took photos with the iPhone of support pages as one cannot switch between Windows so easily. I booted from Linux Mint 15 Cinnamon earlier the evening, set up a wireless hotspot and started browsing with two phones under a minute! The Hell of Gates is a terrible place to be in. If only Mint could offer me USB or even Bluetooth/wireless sync on my phone.

Not sure, my android does it automatically to google.

I add a meeting on my phone, when the meeting reminder comes, a notification pops up automatically on my desktop. I dont do anything.

That G-word is a swear word. One cannot trust Google with any of your data. Even if one would opt for Google, its sync is far from purrfect because it doesn't do notes/memo's and it also don't always sync birthdays correctly, for instance. A few years back it was good, now it is crippleware.

This is going to become more difficult in future since everything is moving to cloud based backups and applications.

I could quickly find out how to sync photos, music and contacts, (for the iPhone) but it is far from ideal. The Nokia, eish, there are hundreds of discussions on the old software like gammu and wammu with mixed results.

Going through my software repository for Nokia gave me one hit, maybe try this?

Works fine for those of us without tinfoil hats.

Only about 35% of the global population has access to the cloud and of those, most cannot afford the expense of syncing data. It will change but device makers gave birth to their devices prematurely because they are ignorant of the reality out there.

Show me how Google sync notes/memo's. Some of us actually use technology to get work done, not to gesture at devices.

It still does not integrate with my PIM and that is where I called it a day with Google. You won't ever convince me to use a service that yesterday in court openly admitted to abusing your data and mine. Perhaps you should read a bit more about the brand you are supporting so zealously.

You just need to add the accounts on the iphone as caldav etc and choose what you want to sync. My dekstop, android phone and ipad are always kept in sync using google.

On the iPhone, sure, but on neither of the Nokias. MS Outlook works well with the old PC Suite 7 in Windows 8, while the same can be done via Funambol's One Mediahub and using Evolution+Syncevolution in Linux. Still no need to involve Google. Google is a security risk and no business should rely upon it. Read the many stories about NSA, court cases about data abuse, etc.
