salary scale will be appriciated

Good luck in your search for a market related below average Linux engineer

Market related, you want to pay them peanuts?

Probably the usual R25K to R30K per month like most other system administrator jobs advertised now days.
If I go for an interview and they offer me R30K per month I'm going to ask the employer what they think is a fair salary for a senior system administrator in their mid to late 30's.
Someone of that profile would have studied for 3 or 4 years and worked for about 10 years so they'll be in their 30's and most likely be supporting a family.

The conversation will probably go something like this:

Me: You want to pay R30000 per month, cost-to-company for a senior position and you want the candidate to have their own reliable personal transport and medical aid. Do you think that is a fair wage for the requirements stipulated?

Employer: Yes, we think it's a fair wage.

Me: Do you think a two or three bedroom apartment in Midrand or Centurion worth R1 million is extravagant?

Employer: No.

Me: Well that's R10000 per month right there with maybe building insurance included.
I see you require reliable personal transport. Do you think a Hyundai i20 or Toyota Yaris is extravagant?

Employer: No.

Me: Well that's R4000 per month over six years at prime. Add on R500 for insurance and R1500 for fuel and the cost is around R6000 per month.
Do you think R5500 for a decent medical aid for a family of four is extravagant?

Employer: No.

Me: If I take the R30000 and deduct the above including pension fund contributions and tax it leaves one with a R300 deficit.
That means there is no money left for food, for water and lights, for a cellphone, for security or for entertainment.
Do you still believe that your offer for a senior position is fair?

Well said. R60k to R70k is a fair salary for a senior Linux systems administrator. Even then with a family of 4 you will struggle. Salaries in South Africa are a joke.

I know that the salary range for positions are very important but simply mailing the poster with your desired salary to see if it falls within their range is also not going to be to painful.

HR can be very very difficult when it comes to salaries, most companies salary information is kept confidential for various reasons.

Most companies only keep salary information confidential for one reason ...
Posting a salary bracket (like R20000 to R40000) doesn't hurt and prevents prospective candidates from needlessly wasting their time in interviews only to be offered a salary that they can't survive on.

I don't disagree, but it isn't always possible, in saying such you shouldn't be going for an interview without making your financial needs clear from the start..
