No, the candidates we interviewed lacked the basic understanding / hands-on experience of managing a Linux environment. While I can appreciate the skill issue, most of them worked in operational corporate environments as "Linux admins" pulling 30-40K/pm. I have taken in an intern which works out great.

It's a difficult scenario, on one hand you need someone with enterprise type experience but in most enterprises a lot of task delegation takes place so they are often skilled in very narrow areas.

I'm generally happier with intelligent newbies who I can train up correctly without preconceived ideas and bad practices.

I actually wanted to say that our Interns receive 7.5k pay per month as well as all the study support and hands on training.

that's a pretty sweet deal imo, considering where you'll be working and all the tech that's involved in a project like this, I can only imagine...

Which is all good until the intern , having leeched your resources learning , leaves for such a corporate environment.
Even if you have contracts in place to try and prevent this , it will still happen. Such contracts are unenforceable in a practical sense in SA and employees know this. Combine this with strong market forces pulling candidates all over the place and you have a recipe for employees leaving or disappearing to higher paying jobs.

Not paying slightly above market related rates in this field ALWAYS gets you into trouble , no matter which way you cut it.

From your posts , I get a strong sense of your belief that "I'm not paying THAT for THAT level of skills - its exorbitant". Unfortunately , your belief is unrelated to what the market is doing , and the prices are not as ridiculous as you think .

Fighting the market to get what you want is ALWAYS a losing battle. Rather go with it. BidorBuy has the funds to do it.

Awesome! Thank you - I have just responded.

(BTW: If others here knew what projects you worked on, you would be lot less liked on this forum....)

Thanks, will check my emails. Just busy remotely on a site, clogging up my VPN...

Yeah, it is difficult for me. Only a select few know what I really are doing.

edit : Will reply to your email soonest. Thanks.

A man has to do what a man has to do...

Considering the number of MyBB CV's I am getting, I will probably have to roll a dice, or do the democratic thing and post a MyBB poll where The_Librarian can then canvass support to get hired :)

Thread subscribed to, else I'll miss something.

Based on the other CV's I am getting in (i.e. "Mail Handler at SAPO", "junior safety ocerffi" or "sales cashier at Mr. Price") you are all the way at the top of that short short-list :).

First priority is to fill a senior position and I have a handful of good CVs for interviews lined up. Will keep in touch with you as discussed.

We also have mountains (mine dumps) and nothing beats Hartees / Val Dam (besides, during all holidays the annoying Gautengers flee the province and Jozi turns into the most pleasant place during those times). So make a move :)

Besides which, there's terrific traffic problems in Cape Town as you have the mountain on one side, and the deep, blue sea on the other... no space for expansion.

Whereby in Gauteng you can drive through the suburbs to avoid most of the traffic if you know your way... :whistling:

But I digress... I'm looking forward to this challenge :)

267 Linux applicants later and it resulted in 1 (!) actual interview. The candidate turned out to be a perfect match and his work-experience/skill-set almost completely matches our current tech-stack.

Unfortunately I had to make the tough decision to either hire someone like The_Librarian or bootstrap 3 youngsters without employment into an internship programme. I felt that it would be a better option move 3 inexperienced people into a work-environment. Sorry The_Librarian, but as explained via email, you are on my shortlist of people I will fall back on when I have new staff requirements.

A bit off topic: I am still looking for Java peeps (https://www.linkedin.com/jobs2/view/81810584) - preferably senior, but I am also opening up a paid internship (7.5k/pm and you will finish the 12 month with Java Associate / Java Programmer and Java web-component developer certs - so a ton of work but this will transform anyone towards a tangible career) - we have a coding challenging and if you know anyone interested, get them to contact us.

BTW - a valuable tip if you are job hunting: Use LinkedIn. Make sure that you have a profile-picture, that your name is spelt correctly and that your profile is up-to-date. Lastly (and this puzzles me) - when you apply, attach your detailed CV - this is needed for paperwork/HR when ref-checks need to be done. The candidate we hired went as far as providing us with web-links to his certification results - something I do not come across very often.

I also find that all MyBB members who contacted me about opportunities have done so in a very professional manner which is refreshing compared to what I am used to from recruiters.

Requirements for the internships? Know some mates that might be interested :)
