Was busy doing a bunch of package updates for a distribution I have running on my local machine, and I selected IS as the mirror of choice. Bad idea... my downloads were crawling at 8KB/s. I gave up at about 15%, and chose a mirror in Germany. Its now downloading at 110-130KB/s and something that would have taken me a couple of hours if I had stayed with IS took a little over 10 minutes to complete from Germany.

Something to do with IS/SAIX link? I am on UUNET's network.

It might have to do with the resources they placed on the IS package server - probably a slow link there.

I also use a germany mirror, with Ireland/HEANET to backup.

It makes sense that a local mirror should be faster, but I have had no luck in getting a local mirror with reasonable speeds. Reasonable being actually useful!

I've had lots of bad experiences with local mirrors. Yesterday I tried to download an Eclipse package from sun.ac.za (Stellenbosch University). The download was maxed out at 3K! Switching to a mirror overseas and I got over 100K. I mainly use mirrors from Europe which seem to be very fast. These ones particularly never seem to give problems.

Puzzle (Switzerland)
Switch (Switzerland)
HEANet (Ireland)

And then most UK and German services are good too.

FTP @ IS is a waste of time.

I downloaded mySQL on Tuesday (a public holiday), and it kep timing out to IS FTP. Used an international mirror and all was OK.

Why IS cannot expend the same effort of their FTP server as they do on their news server is beyond me.

What I've been told on several occasions and from different sources, is that non-IS customers get heavily-throttled access to ftp://ftp.is.co.za most of the time, whereas allegedly IS customers get full speed access [whatever speed that may be] outside of SAST daylight business hours...

Damn, those non-IS okes must suffer. Me, as an IS customer, only get 5kb or so outside business hours....
