We have all had this before so I decided to start a thread

Which is the best, stability wise as well as ease of use
 
Specify versions maybe??
Windows 7 vs Ubuntu 10.4 as an example

I use windows cause I can play all my games on it :D

Windows Hosting vs Linux Hosting

But OS Comments is good as well, nice pc in your signature naked
 
Like with all these type of technology questions, it all depends on what you intend using it for.

The same question can be asked about database servers, programming languages even cellphones. The answer always has to start with the question, what you going to use it for?

This is very true, I develop on a LAMP stack and use RHEL and second to that Debian Lenny and they serve me well. A .net developer will not see this the same way.

As far as stability is concerned, I think in today's world it is more about the sysadmin than the OS. Get a really good sysadmin and your Windows/Linux box will be great, get a pìss poor sysadmin and you will probably find your system to be fairly unstable and likely susceptible to an exploit.

Ill comment on os.... if you are starting out with no computer experience, (because once someone knows an os, there is usually a resistance to change) I would recommend ubuntu over windows- here are my reasons.
much more difficult to get infected
software centre makes it extremely easy to find and install new software
you do not have to install a single driver, everything works after os install, including your printer (you may have problems with unusual devices though)
all programs are automatically sorted in subcategories, and not just lumped together under start>programs
unmounting a usb is more intuitive- its not hidden in the bottom right corner, but rather in the file browser (and on desktop)

windows is easier if you play games, or run windows specific software

^^ Agree with this. I'm on the .Net side of things mostly, but also have linux hosting for stuff that doesn't need .Net. They're all stable. Bigger question is which hosting provider is more stable. In my case for example, I had endless problems with Web Africa, and have found stability (for the most part.. one or two little issues) with Afrihost.
 
I use Fedora 13 on a daily basis on my work Laptop. Much easier to manage Solaris and REHS servers than with Windows.
I can test scripts on my own machine before unleashing it onto the servers. 99% of configurations can be tested on my own machine, before making config changes on production. Exporting displays to my own machine doesn't require additional software.

At home, I use Windows for games, that's all.

The answer has already been given though - it depends on what you want to do with it, and what you are developing with. I work on both, and stability is on par, as is functionality, for the most part.
