The young male lion which escaped from the Karoo National Park is still on the loose - and it has quite the appetite.

The lion escaped under one of the park's fences on June 5 and has been heading towards Fraserburg, SANParks said in a statement.

Meanwhile a farmer reported seeing lion spoor on his land. However the lion has evaded capture and was not lured by the bait set out for him.

According to the Cape Times, relatives of a young farmer near the park's border said on Facebook that eight of his ewes were killed by the lion.

It is suspected that the three-year-old lion was forced out of the park by other older males.

The search is ongoing.

Diamond mesh or welded mesh of a minimum of 3mm

So this lion dug down 600cm without touching the electrified fence, then burrowed through concrete and finally leapt over the 1m buffer fence.

Impressive.

And...

In respect of animals in this class that are kept in captivity, the enclosure fences
must be inspected on a daily basis;

No big deal. Just get the lion chasers from OR Tambo, they'll round it up soon enough.

Kept in an enclosure or game park I presume the perimiters must be of the same safety level.

There are more lions in captivity in South Africa than in the wild. The Karoo National Park is a national park run by SANPARKS, so it does not fall under the jurisdiction of the provincial authorities, i.e. Cape Nature. There's no way they are going to build a fence like that around a 750 square km national park. Imagine what the cost would be.
 
Cape Town - The escape artist 3-year-old lion, which has been giving trackers the run-around for 24 days, is back at the Karoo National Park after being darted from a helicopter in the Nuweveld mountain range on Monday.

Netwerk24 reported that Sylvester had been caught, literally, napping as he was lazing on a rock, soaking up the sun.

Leon Müller, assistant director of the Northern Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Conservation, announced on social media that the big cat had been caught and was back in the park.

He’d been fitted with a tracking collar before being taken to the park’s boma.

He’ll be staying there for the next few days, before a decision is made if he’ll be set loose in the park again.

During the 24 days Sylvester was walk-about, he helped himself to 19 sheep, a donkey and a kudu. There is a plus though, says Dian Gouws. With a lion on the prowl, stock thieves were too scared to venture
out.
