A South African man was killed and eaten by lions at a game farm in North West province, police said on Thursday.

Samuel Boosen, a 36-year-old caretaker at the Aloe Ridge Lodge at Swartruggens, about 150 km (90 miles) west of Johannesburg, went into the lion enclosure to feed the animals before being attacked on Tuesday.

"He went into the cage... (about) nine lions then attacked and ate him up until the only parts that remained were the skull and spine," police spokesperson superintendent Lesego Metsi said.

"It happened in full view of two witnesses."

He said it was unclear why Boosen, who had worked at the lodge for four years, had gone into the enclosure as he usually fed the lions by placing meat through the fence. Police did not suspect foul play.

A game reserve owner was eaten by a pride of lions at his farm near Johannesburg in April last year, after reportedly suffering a stroke and falling out of his vehicle.

Hmm, despite the fact that no foul play is suspected, this does sound dodge.

I hate the way all these IOL and news24 stories are always so brief and devoid of key information.

I agree that it sounds dodgy, especially when they say he usually fed them through the fence. They should check his insurance policies just to be sure.

yep' it doesnt sound good and for the fact that it is in some dogy small dorpy where a whole lot of human abuse in rife and people get away with it.watch the space.

Totally different from the Beeld article. also a difference of 7 years in age :)

Swartruggens.

I also see that COSATU are throwing their toys out the cot about this and wanting the farm owners arrested and prosecuted... For what exactly I'm not sure, but then I doubt that they are either...
