But in the lions case it is really really fscked up because IIRC they are the second richest union in SA.
I don't know where you get your info from but they are very far from the top when it comes to financials.

They were in serious poo December last year when a big sponsor cancelled it sponsorship deal. They waren't able to pay certain groups within their union because of that. They did manage from there on, but it is not going to good with their financials.

The Blue Bulls and the Sharks are the two provinces doing ok. The Blue Bulls Rugby Union has got money problems but the Blue Bulls Company is doing very well. Hopefully the Blue Bulls Rugby Union will get some money now from the semi's and the final to help them out of the dwang, but as for the Lions... they are no where near 2nd on the log when it comes to financials...

And another one.

And to top that the coach has been asked to resign. All is not well at GLRU.
Yeah, they got Jake White to have a look at their structures and see if he can help the Lions to get up again and deliver. Hopefully they will also see the light and start a rugby academy. It has really paid of well for the Bulls and the Sharks has also caught on and have also already started reaping the profits...

The thing is the Lions are bringing the players through the ranks but then the other unions just buy them....

Hold on to your players!

Today is a very sad day for me.

Loffie has been "sacked"

I wish GLRU will realise that it's not the coach who is to blame for their lack of performance. The GLRU doesn't have the money to keep desent players, the don;t have the money to get a Rudgy clinic going to get new talent. You should look at how the company is run and not blame the coach.

It's with great sadness that I leave with Loffie now. I'll be a full on Bulls supporter from next season. I Stopped supporting the bulls 19 years ago and have been rooting for the Lions since then. I think it's time that the Lions just call it a day and use Ellispark for Soccer instead.

Cheers
Ex-Lions supporter.

However, rugby365 can reveal that White has been earmarked to take over Eloff's position as head coach ... maybe even before the start of the Currie Cup competition in July.

rugby365 have reliable heard that White's role at the Lions will go beyond just an "audit" and that a fulltime coaching role may well be on the cards.

Interesting. And now we just need Heyneke Meyer at the Cheetahs.

Pitbull. It's not just about money. You and other people have said in this thread - its all about pride.

What happens in Pretoria that the players don't go? Yes, there will always be guys that leave, but the bulk and more talented of them all stay. The Bulls have very rich traditions and is common knowledge that they operate like a family.

A coach can help build the pride but its the structure of management that will ultimately build the pride of the players.

Frans Ludeke was the head coach of the Lions not too many seasons ago. He was not able to hold on to key players. The names of Wikus van Heerden and Brian Habanna are the biggest and most prominent that have left the Lions during the Ludeke era, yet Frans Ludeke came to the Bulls and got them into the Currie Cup final the first season and into the Super 14 final in his second season.

Louis Luyt have said at the beginning of the year that things will only go downhill for the Lions if they don't change their management style and structures... they didn't and we all know what is going on at the moment.

The Blue Bulls Rugby Union is in some financial troubles since the Blue Bulls Company was established but atleast the players are looked after and the structures have been put in place to ensure that things will work. A lot of things can improve in the blue province, but atleast a lot of things to work and has been the case for the last decade or so.

Yes, I think it is unfair to fire the coach if your structures is up to sh*t, but we have to remeber that Loffie himself said that he will resign if he cannot turn the Lions around after his third S14 season. He had his 3rd S14 and and he achieved absolutely nothing, so I think he should be fired if he doesn't want to resign himself. They should just not stop with the coach but continue into the management structures of the Union to really get the wrot out.

That is just my 2c's

That is a bit silly IMO they are the players and in the prof. era of rugby we are in now you get paid to do a job. The big bosses pick the managers and you work.

But I must say hats off to the players for backing Loffie.

Loffie created the one thing the Lions never had...... PRIDE.
That feeling where you will play and be proud to play for the Lions, just like the Bulls. He has created that from nothing with brand new players. And then this?

The problems with the Lions is not the Coach ;)

I hope the players all leave tbh.

Re the Lions. One word: politics. Every union that doesn't put rugby first and throw the money behind those that make the game (i.e. the players and the fans) will inevitably lose the plot.

I agree with you. However Loffie brought that Pride back into the Lions team. Sure some players will leave if they are not looked after financialy that is just a given. But the players have turned into a close knit family. The problem with the Lions is MONEY !.

Unless they start to get the business side of it going, the Lions can;t do nothing. Not even with Jake White as coach. The players play for Money, Ellispark is built in the hell hole of Africa.

If you want more people in the stands make a plan on getting a new stadium first. The people will start filling the stands again. The Bulls had a massive dry run a few years back, they where the worse team in SA. But Loftus was always Packed. Breed pride within the Lions and the Supporters will follow with the same pride. Win or Lose.

I have been the Laughing stock of my friends because I support the Lions, and I'm proud to be one (Used to be one). They have a loyal following. Build on it and give the players, fans what they want.

Ellispark's location is the biggest problem ;)

Grey in Bloem is again turning out big stars this year. Already smashed Paarl Boys High 50-8. Playing Affies soon and would like to see that result. My prediction? Close to the Paarl score.
Similar, but not quite. They were still thrashed though.

Most of the first team players already have signed contracts, mostly with the Cheetahs, but one or two for the bulls. The problem is that the bigger teams often buy out those contracts. First team this year is not all that amazing in my opinion, damn good, but that game against Affies wasnt their strongest showing. What will be interesting to see is how Grey College (aka Free State) perform at the Craven Week.

Wait till you start supporting the Cheetahs like me.;)

I have grown immune to all the comments. But still. I will most probably die a Cheetah supporter. But I can understand your frustration with the Lions.

Thing is. The Cheetahs will always be everybody's second team. I've lost count of the amount of people that support other teams but the Cheetahs are always their second team.
I personally only support the Cheetahs and find it difficult to cheer any other team on.
BUT...
I will be shouting at or for the Bulls come this weekend. In general I'm more of a rugby supporter than a "certain teams" supporter. Except for the Cheetahs of course. :)

Yeah of course Springboks too. But other games are for pure entertainment because I love the game. And believe me I don't miss a lot of games. PVR FTW. Gonna be getting into coaching pretty soon.
