Some explanations and videos of how stable ground can become something like quicksand during an earthquake.

I heard about liquefaction yonks ago in a movie so its interesting to see what it actually looks like. Hope I never experience it.

There was a nice, section about liquefaction back in the day on the seconds from disaster series that National Geographic aired.

1995 earthquake in Kobe "Kobe Earthquake" (Killer Quake) was the episode name.

Any builder and construction worker floating a floor or pouring a concrete slab knows all of this and carries out the same experiment regularly.

And any kid standing on the beach and wriggling his feet in the wet sand effectively does the same.

There was also a piece on it in a show about the earth quake in Japan in 2011

From the link I take it we live in a bowl filled with sand and water and someone is pounding the table like there is no tomorrow...No wonder I can't sleep most nights.

Heard of a fisherman who drove a 4x4 onto a beach and left it running while he was fishing as he was having trouble with the starter. He only noticed it was sinking when teh engine cut out due to the sand as the vehicle sank into the beach.
