LIVE: EFF to announce coalition decision

I must confess that I'm quite impressed that they've taken a principled stand on this.

I still think they're completely unrealistic in their approach to growing our country, but they can honestly say that they have not sold out their constituency.

Fair enough, but I'll be suprised if DA hasn't got some of the other smaller parties in Jbg, we'll find out later.

Only need 2 more votes in JHB - Cope, UDM, ACDP, FF+ all have one - this deal is sealed, as long as EFF stays on board till council vote.

I think it's sort of an unofficial coalition to avoid alienating supporters of both parties. Win win for both of them. At the end of the day the goal is to remove the ANC. As long as they don't throw their toys out during every budget meeting, I don't have an issue with this...

Smart move from both the DA and the EFF. Basically, this is just word play. Effectively this will be a coalition, but since most people don't understand that an agreement to vote a certain way is actually what a coalition is, they can deny that it is a "coalition", thus not alienating either party's followers.

I honestly feel the list of demands was there to make sure they do not form a coalition with either party, that is why the line about die stem is in there, no way the DA will agree to that, and that is why the line about JZ is in there, no way the ANC will agree to that.

that list of demands ensured no coalition, and insured the EFF keeps its voters, while removing the ANC.
 
I love the EFF. Very cerebral in their approach. I guess we will be getting a DA mayor in JHB.

Not really. A coalition is bigger than this - it's shared objectives and values.

This is just a mayoral vote.

Based on ANC councillors' track record for attendance (or being awake) at council meetings, the DA will have the majority at most votes :D

No. A coalition is defined as a temporary alliance to achieve a common goal. There is nothing implied about shared values, and having a common goal does not imply wider shared objectives. In this case their common goal is kicking out the ANC and that's about where it ends. This is a coalition, no matter how he twists the rhetoric.

From my understanding though; the EFF can block things they don't agree on. Or, is it more of a case that the EFF will just have a little more say when it comes to certain issues, but not the final say?

I think most council resolutions need agreement from a simple majority of councillors present in the meeting.
Absent ANC members can't vote against it, possibly pushing the DA to have a majority even if EFF disagrees ;)
