Today Eskom CEO Brian Dames appeared in Parliament and confirmed what the DA has been warning against for several months: load shedding is imminent and unavoidable.

Mr Dames has cited “extended maintenance” as the main reason for the imminent power cuts. Asked why this maintenance had not been carried out sooner, he pointed to issues that had emerged at Koeberg and Medupi and other matters.

We heard this in 2008, we were told it would not happen again and now here we are again. It is clear that Eskom and the Minister cannot be trusted.

While we welcome Mr Dames’ admission, of the Eskom’s failure to keep the lights on during the forthcoming winter season, it comes after denial on the part of the entity that it was in fact in a crisis.

The imminent power cuts, similar to those of 2008 could have been avoided if the following measures had been initiated from the onset:

A plan needed to be drawn up in the event of the Cahora Bassa supply, from Mozambique, failing, which is now the case. Eskom should have done maintenance work on other stations in anticipation of a possible failure of the Mozambique line. We relied too heavily on it.
Contractors at the Medupi Power Plant project had been either dismissed or held liable for the delays in construction.
In addition, a permanent team from the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) should have been appointed by Minister Malusi Gigaba to mediate in the conflict between workers and contractors to speed up the process.
Other options to boost capacity, such as allowing Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to enter the market and ease the burden on the state entity, should have been launched sooner. The IPPs should be allowed to urgently enter the market.

Minister Gigaba, Mr Dames and all stakeholders must ensure that everything will be done to avoid power cuts.

The current crisis at Eskom is a perfect example of what the lack of implementation and the failure to prioritise the basic needs of South Africans can do. This should never occur in future!

Time to start selling UPS units again.

Of course all of this could be avoided by pulling one switch - to BHP.

Isn't it going to be nice knowing you are sitting in the dark, while Billiton who get paid to use Eskom power are unaffected.

Good thing we invested in a decent UPS for our office and most PC's are laptops.

Also just got a new deep cycle battery for my home solar electric setup so I'm ready for Eskom ...

This is Eskom's way of punishing us for not approving their 30% increase.

Also, a way of instilling fear and panic in the public ahead of next year's increase hearings.

Hilary Joffe, spokesperson for Eskom tells you and me that WE must come to the party when it comes to electricity consumption yet they are screwing us over like there is no tomorrow, these turds are a joke to say the least. They plan this maintenance in winter when we need it the most, to me that sounds like "f-you South Africa".

South Africa’s State-owned electricity utility Eskom has approved a new five-year generation strategy, premised on an ‘80:10:10 principle’, which implies average plant availability of 80%, with unplanned outages limited to 10% and scheduled maintenance also set at 10%.

This meant that Eskom would, for the first time, undertake “long-duration planned maintenance” during the coldest winter months.

However, divisional executive Kannan Lakmeeharan highlighted the fact that the 10% planned maintenance level would be spread over a full operating year. In other words, there would be trough maintenance periods, of around 2 000 MW, in winter, and peak periods, of around 8 000 MW, during the summer months of November and December.

this is absolutely shocking. no one in eskom is being held accountable for something they should have done in 2008. why isn't someone being held accountable for this. instead eskom is allowed to increase electricity by 30% only for consumers to have power cuts because they have an excuse. appalling.

Just wish they could warn us in time so I can make sure my battery is charged

When they say "we must come to the party" I hope it's to one of their end of year events.

Just like everything the cANCer has screwed the power generator of the country up as well.

viva idiots viva

By "accountable" I presume you mean Eskom accountants calculating management bonuses.

Is there a contract between supplier and consumer?

What recourse does a consumer have when their business etc is negatively affected by this ****? It seems none. Time to take to the streets, people, and find out where these cnuts live and find the box on the street corner and snip until they get their heads out of their and each others arses. This affected me severely in 2008 as I was trading equities online (leveraged) and even a half hour power loss can easily turn a profit into a loss. I don't see why I need to spend money on a UPS-that's treating the symptom.

We have little choice but to rely on electricity in the main. (:erm:)

The private sector would be dead in a second if they "performed" like this.

Guess I'll be camping at the office more....they'll run generators round the clock if need be.

Note to self...buy some charcoal & store it for emergency braai.

They can talk the biggest load of horseshyte when they want to. When did they ask for the increase?
October?

Even if Nersa said yes their planning sucked and they would not have had time to do the maintenance in the summer.

He said profits for the full 2012 financial year are expected to be lower, with break even at best during the second half of the year, when Eskom must take advantage of lower summer demand to do higher levels of maintenance on its power stations.
Oh I guess you didn't plan it did you?

Use the bloody profits you use on parties and bonuses.

Fark eskom, the ANC and their whole crooked entourage.
