I know we've all seen the international price comparisons for DSL done to death - but this one really takes the cake:
DSL in Germany gets cheap and dirty:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/12/29/t-online_cutprice_dsl/
T-Online - DSL line 3.99 Euros per month (2gb cap - 12.99 Euros for extra 8gb), and their closest competitor is Freenet (5.99 Euros per month).
Oh, and according to www.congster.de this is a 1mbps line with no port shaping.
So basically for R25 pm you can get an unshaped 1mbps DSL connection with a 2GB limit and an extra 8GB for R100.
I know that the SA environment cannot hope to compete with this, however, DSL also started out relatively expensive in its early days in Europe and the US and the price has steadily come down - how come in SA the cost hasn't budged?
SA telecoms has to catch a wake up fast - in the USA you can lease a full dedicated server with 100mbps throughput and a 1TB monthly transfer limit plus the operating system of your choice for less than R1000pm. To do the same here you will be paying more like R50000pm, or more.
Our company does large website developments - where do you think all our hosting business goes?
