Random Rantings from a local Guy.
Spelling mistakes and grammatical faults are there on purpose.

This is probably old news but if someone can explain?

And now for my two cents worth, probably a bit less.

In a country obviously starved for bandwidth, how does pricing add up?

Telkom always say that they have more than enough bandwidth and people should look no where else but to them, for the best and fastest service. Should I believe it?

Ok, no I don’t like many of us I had had to deal with telkom’s call centers, so definitely a no on the service. Then look at bandwidth – does anyone notice something peculiar?

Apart from the Subsidizing of international bandwidth with local call charges, look at what is to offer from the local ISP’s. The only company currently supplying local only accounts are through IS (Internet Solutions), to name the some are Openweb and Webafrica.

Local only accounts cost R70 for 10 gig and R130 from 30 gig – which from the outset does not look promising. Imagine having 3 x 10 gig accounts? R210 – R130 = R80 difference which is more that half way to another 30 gig.

Now look at another package from Openweb which really blows my mind.
They have a 1Gig international account + 29 gig local for R139. That is R9 more that 30 Gig local only.

So does that mean – leaving the missing local Gig out that International Bandwidth costs around R9 for 1 gig? Or the opposite is true that people are being ripped off for local bandwidth?

When you thought it could not get worse!
Having bought your brilliant account for R9 = 1 international gig + 29 gig local = ~ R130 (you know what I mean), you set out and explore the internet. You heard about telkom’s new website all local. Its called www.dobroadband.co.za, or www.do.co.za you just had to see what your favorite company was up too. Now I will mention the bad part (discretion is advised for sensitive readers). There is no way for you to split that precious 1 gig to only count for international, yes you can use smart programs like route sentry and connect with a different account for local, but for normal users that’s not even an option. Many people have failed to realize this and still keep on buying them wasting money.

Coming back to that specific website, Say for instance you have 1 gig international account, yet you find that specific site fascinating and you had to go there every day. Browse around a bit and then read your email and sign off. BEWARE. That is all you would be able to do with your amazing sized cap. http://www.do.co.za is a whopping 447 KB (458,715 bytes) ie ½ a Meg. In realistic terms if most websites had that size you better not abuse your “always on” internet – and rather refrain from spending more that 30min a day on the internet, you might just find that always on = few days on.
