Can anyone give me some advice? Currently my 2 home computers connect independently to the internet through a switch.

I want to change this situation and let one of them connect to the internet through the other, but still working through the switch (hub).

How can I do that?

I think the important question is why would you want to do that? :confused:

You will basically then need to set up Internet Connection Sharing (XP has it). Both connecting through the switch to the net is more efficient, flexible and easier to do. Also gives less hastles.
 
Because the ISP he uses doesn't allow multiple logins. Perhaps Robmugaab is thinking of doing ICS but I won't recommend that. Configure the router to do share the connection to all pc's on the network Robmugaab.

Is this closer to what you want? Should we explain the whole process?

If at all possible, please explain the whole process you speak of step by step ... if not too much trouble. :)

Is the ICS route simple and straighforward? Why would you advise against it?

Some (cheap) ISP's told me they will not allow multiple logins ... so more people may become interested in this.

do u want to have 1 pc connected to the internet connected to its own account and then your other pc just connecting through that comouter but u dont need to sign onto the net with user name and pass?
 
Yes, precisely. Modem + 2 pc's connected to a switch. Network setup wizzard did not work up to now ... should it in this case? If I can do this, I can buy a 3G account at www.cybersmart.co.za at R100 per month - I asked them and they said they do not allow multiple logins.

If you have a normal Telkom Marconi POTS the steps would be as follows to let the ADSL router do the ISP negotiation for you and distribute the connection to all the pc's on your network. Be warned though that for some reason I have experience a marginal slow down in net speed for some reason.

Step 1 >>> Change the local LAN address of one of the PC's to 192.168.10.1 or anything in the range between 192.168.10.1 - 192.168.10.255 except 192.168.10.200 because that is the POTS router's default web interface access addy.

Step 2 >>> Open Internet Explorer (I had trouble with FireFox) and open the address: 192.168.10.200 and enter the username and password you specified. I cannot remember what the default is.

Step 3 >>> The QUICK SETUP tab should open up asking you to select one of the following... Operation Modes:

PROTOCOL SELECT: Ethernet Over ATM ( RFC 1483 Bridge Mode )

Ethernet Over ATM ( RFC 1483 Router Mode )

PPP over ATM ( RFC 2364 )

IP over ATM ( RFC 1577 )

PPP over Ethernet ( RFC 2516 )

Select PPP over Ethernet and hit the NEXT button

Step 4 >>> You will now be on a page called "Quick Setup - IP and VC" that doesn't need any tweaking. Hit the next button.

Step 5 >>> Now you are on a page titled "Quick Setup - PPP" where you must enter your ISP username and password information. Make sure it is correct before hitting the next button.

Step 6 >>> Now you are on a page titled "Quick Setup - Information" giving you a short summary of the info you entered. Hit the FINISH button!

Step 7 >>> The new page is titled "Quick Setup - Save Config & Restart System". Hit the SAVE button and wait for it to finish. Do not RESTART yet.

Step 8 >>> In the BASIC CONFIG drop down menu to the left of the window select SYSTEM. Find the "DNS Server 1 Address:" parameter settings box and change it to 196.25.1.1 and hit the FINISH button.

Step 9 >>> Now look for DHCP in the BASIC CONFIG drop down list to the left. Make sure DHCP is enabled.

Step 10 >>> Select SAVE & RESTART from the BASIC CONFIG drop down list. Hit SAVE and then when it is done RESTART!

STEP 11 >>> Set the LAN adaptor of each PC on your network to OBTAIN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY in your computers Network COnfiguration...

Done...
