Hi,

I've got a client looking to track his ADSL IP address to a DNS. He requires a service like "DynDNS" and "NO-IP".

However he's using only local accounts due to amount of data he's transferring, so he cant connect to the international "DynDNS".

I was wondering if there is some software (Open Source would be nice) that i could host my own "DynDNS" service for the client locally and use my business co.za domain for the IP?

Is there some server software that could pull the API from the ADSL company and covert the IP to a DNS?

If you in Cape Town and willing to help us out, PM me (Will be willing to pay)

Thanks!

what routers etc do you and the client use?
anything "fancy" ?

If not, you may need to get creative. One way is a PHP page on your side - he connects to it at regular intervals, you get the IP of caller, and you pass it on using a DNS script is one way.

Wow, thanks for the fast replies :D

The customer isnt fixed to any one ADSL router.

Also, he isnt running any PC's on the ADSL line, only DVRs (Digital Video Recorders)

Create a CNAME DNS record in the zone file of your domain name 'business.co.za'.

For example:

joe IN CNAME joe.dyndns.org.

So now that means 'joe.business.co.za' will automatically point to 'joe.dyndns.org' which then automatically points to the current dynamic IP address which is listed at 'joe.dyndns.org'.

If you do not know how to create a CNAME record, then just request your domain hosting provider to do it for you...

This should work instantly!

Whooops, didn't see that part - my bad!

Aren't there any local South African Dynamic DNS providers??

You get Local-Only accounts that have this feature built in, from your isp. So you configure the host from your isp control panel. Please note that not all isp's have this.

I visited the guys of WebAfrica at their offices, and explained my situation to them.

They were very helpful, but couldn't really give me a solution. They said i could get the API of all current connections and get the IP off that and then convert it to the DNS. But how....i have noo idea.

I was looking around the internet and found this: MintDNS

This program allows you to setup your own DynDNS or No-IP. Catch? It has to run on a Windows 2000/2003 server platform and one fixed IP address.

The kewl thing about this, is that it seems you can edit the Linksys and Netgear routers to update the DNS of your ADSL IP address!

Thanks for all the help so far. I'm going to try set this up and see where it goes....

If you anyone's got a better idea..please post it :D

Thanks!

here is your answer post
Check this thread out their might some info to assist

Try http://www.dyndns.co.za/cgi-bin/gnudip.cgi

get an axxess account. a dns name is assigned when your router authenticates with axxess. no monitoring software or settings on your router is required and it works 100% on their local-only account.

http://www.axxess.co.za/local.php

look at the vIP DNS option
