hey all, i am thinking of starting a local edonkey server for the people that have only local bandwidth.

i would like to know how many people would actually support this idea.
i got the equipment just need a static local ip which should not be to hard to organize.

maby if you are really interested you could take part in setting up this service for those who don't know edonkey is:

(also known as eDonkey2000 network or eD2k) is a decentralized, server-based, peer-to-peer file sharing network used primarily to exchange audio files, video files and computer software. Like most file sharing networks, it is decentralized; files are not stored on a central server but are exchanged directly between users based on the peer-to-peer principle

anymore ideas would be grateful

I would use it allot! Im sure it will be supported with emule right? Also, would i be able to download things from other people connected to other ed2k servers? (For instance the server acts the same way as use net servers)

crysis r u expriencing any slow downloads with i.s news server

If the files arnt cached, then yes. Its always like that because IS shape the downloads of non cached content to 10kb/s. Sometimes i get slightly more, maybe max about 14 - 16kb/s. Saix news server on the other hand is allot faster, but more expensive.

i only get 4 on the news server.. wish the "secret" never got out.. enjoyed the good ol full speed days :(

Yeah i know but i start downloaind at 460kbps, after a couple seconds 6-8 kbps????? y ive seen that grab-it slows it down. i installed supernzb then i downloaded the same file at full speed dont know if it is grabit or i.s

hey guys spoke 2 my cousin in U.S.A he says that u must use supernzb it is much faster than grabit(lots of bugs) thats wat they use that side so it really works 4 me try it maybe it will help u 2

What gear do you have?

well i am planning a linux dedicated server.
i have been testing the windows xp version of the edonkey server (lugdunum) between me and a friend and i have been successful. the software side i have covered. now its the hardware.
so far this is what i have:
asus a2m-sli motherboard
1 gig ddr400
20gig hard drive IDE
the rest i can salvage from somewhere.

so far i have run into one problem that emule uses kad and it would use int cap if we use route sentry.
so far i have one idea and that is to load a ipban list that bans all none local ips.

also i have another problem and that i need a static ip because you need to set its ip in the config file of the server.
also i will need somwhere to host the server cause if it is on my line it will be very very slow cause i care for my fellow south Africans :D

so any help would be appreciated.

shot peace out

ps... the police wont do anything, i am not hosting anything thats illegal so :P, its the users that not me. they could ask me to close it down but technically i am not doing anything wrong. if it was so easy to close down a torrent tracker or a edonkey server they would all be closed now. theres a way around every law

emule will be supported. The problem is that other people connected to other edonkey servers are not in south africa. i am making this server for south Africa only

Ok, And also, where will you find somewhere to host it? Finding good bandwidth in this country wont be free... Will you charge for this?

that is the thing i am worring about, i want to host it at one of my friends house where he has adsl and only uses it to browse and email and facebook but i need a static ip. my fathers company is upgrading to leased lines and ill maby sneak in a computer cause im helping them set it up.... but i dont want to cause my fathers compan trouble so, im thinking of speaking to one of the isp resellers try and get a good price oe somthing and then just put adverts on the website and get donations, but i duno any ideas

doesnt ftp files have to be hosted somewhere. Then the legal issues arise. Thats the whole reason for p2p in the first place.

edonkey has noting to do with ftp, i duno where the hell that come from.

i cant just upload files i need to have a computer run a specific program

I don't think there are a lot of ed2k users imho in SA that are using ADSL.

Most are probably most of SA ed2k userrs are on dial-up/ISDN and can connect to intl clients easily.

However in the good old razorback2 days I was using an emule mod that could identify ip adresses and would display the persons country of origin by means of a flag icon flag.

Even on very popular scene releases (0-day), mp3's movies TVshows etc I never ever saw a single SA flag. I could see mine as a source but never anyone else (that was about 3 years ago).

Lately I'm mostly using my gb's up on youtube so p2p is taking second place, a far second
