Local exchanges and loadshedding

MSAN's have their own backup of approx 4 hours.
Telkom themselves the batteries last for 6 hours.
Only major centers have generator backup.

how does 2 mins into loadshed sound, dead absolutely dead. Area middle of cape town

Damn, had a loadshed this morning and it blew up my Netgear modem when the mains returned :(
Fortunately I have an old Billion backup.
Cannot even claim on insurance as modems cost less than my excess :(

That sucks. Bloody eskom. Mine is behind a UPS now so hopefully better protection.

I've just started noticing a recurring problem with my exchange after load shedding. After the electricity comes back on,
the line syncs with the exchange no problem, but the PPPOE concentrator for the exchange (essentially the PPPOE server) goes up and down, resulting in my PPPOE account authenticating and connecting for a few minutes and then dying. This goes on for about 4 hours after the exchange comes back up and then eventually stabilises. I know it's the PPPOE concentrator because I'm using a PPPOE scanner and I can see exactly what's happening. Really frustrating. It's obvious that load shedding is really messing up the exchange.
