Hi All,

I need some advice before I embark on this exercise.

I am currently on a static IP, 5GB threshold solution for my business through Interet Solutions. Because I work from home, all the kids machines share this connection, and unfortunately, I generally hit my threshold limit around mid month and end up running at 128kbps for the rest of the month. Personally this is okay, but for work it kills me. I often have to plug in my 3G to get work done (publishing, remote desktop, etc) and this chews up cash.

What I want to do is get a second ADSL line installed with a 30GB local only account. Majority of my business work is done locally, so this would suite me perfectly.

My setup is a Xeon server running Win2K3 x64. This machine has 2 NIC's. One internet facing and one LAN facing. All traffic routes though this machine onto the net, and protected by WinGate.

I want to do something like install a third NIC into the machine and connect this NIC to my new local only ADSL router. I need to be able to have the machine identify the destination of whatever traffic is going through it and send it off on the respective connection.

I have seen a thread about route sentry, but it mentions controlling the dial-up PPPoE on the routers which does not suite my setup. I have no control over the IS connection. I need to control the routing via software on the PC and send it out the respective NIC to the respective router.

If I could do this, my 5GB threshold would easily see me the month, and my work would not be affected at all even if it does run out as I would have my work traffic all going out the local only account.

Ideas? Suggestions? Any boff out there, feel free to respond :)

TIA

@dshutts: Is this setup not going to require any changes on my Billion IS router? It will simply forward the traffic to the correct gateway and my ADSL routers still control the connection?

You don't need to get a 2nd physical ADSL line to use multiple accounts... I have the same scenario as you, and once my TelkomInternet cap hits, I start using it as local only (also to work VPN), and just dial a second Axxess prepaid account (on the same ADSL line) for international bandwidth, just configuring my routing tables appropriately.

How do I plug a second ADSL modem onto the same line? Surely I need a second line for that? I never knew it was possible.

So on my one line, I can keep my IS connection running with static IP, then plug in my netgear router/modem and use it to dial up to a second local only account?

U don't need a second router. Just set your current router to half bridge mode and tell your pc to dial out with the different adsl accounts.

Not possible. Current router is supplied by IS and is static IP. I don't have, and am not allowed, access to the router. IS control it completely. If I want changes done, I have to send through a request. It is like this with all static IP accounts.
I am looking for a solution where the IS router stays as it is, and I put up a second ADSL modem - same line if possible - connected to a local only account. Then all internal traffic is routed through the respective gateway.

Make sense?

With any luck the router might already bridge pppoe packets, even if it already has its own pppoe connection. I know my cheap dlink router can do this.

Do you absolutely require a static IP? I find using a dynamic DNS is sufficient for my needs, e.g. dyndns.com. You can setup your PC or router to automatically update the IP address associated with your (free) dynamic domain name, so that the domain name always references your latest IP address.

Ye. For my business static IP is crucial unfortunately. I run websites on my server to testing purposes, exchange server with push email to my cell, source control for developers working from home, SQL Server access, etc...
I used to use DynDns but found it too unreliable for my needs.

I have contacted Interprise regarding this and they reckon they will come up with a solution for me, and try integrate it all on the Billion router. So holding thumbs :)
