Hi, was wondering what everyone's view is on LLU... Are we likely to see it in the near future? Will it be advantageous for the consumer? Will it disadvantageous for the seller? What sort of price drop would we see?

Well everyones views have been fleshed out and exposed in the ICASA LLU hearings as well as the preparatory work threads for the MyBB submissions. In summary everybody except for Telkom believe LLU is a good thing. The cellular operators believe that LLU on the copper system is needed but their system must be left untouched
What do you mean by "the seller" because LLU means more sellers and for the new guys it is good. If you mean Telkom the answer is more complicated. LLU is bad for Telkom's profits and business model especially in the short term but this is largely because Telkom is not properly structured to fit the current market. Depending on how the LLU process unfolds Telkom could loose a hell of a lot and unfortunately they appear to be placing themselves on track for this exact course. Currently Telkom have a slight upper hand in piloting the process, for one thing they have more support from the unions than the other operators and the fact that they own the copper should be carefully used to their advantage.

I suspect you are actually wanting some sort of a summary for journalism or study assignment purposes which you should state outright. If you are an advisor to the Minister who wants a quick heads up tell her she needs to put Telkom management in a room and read the riot act to them that unless they get on board with a new competitive internet regieme they are going to find themselves fined side ways by various regulators which the ANC can't really afford to defy. If Telkom gets on board the Internet train it could over 10 years become a bright star of the continent.

Hey Paul, awesome response, thanks! I am just interested in what is happening in the telecommunications department and don't know where the best place to look for info on this is. Thanks schumi for the link :)
