If I have a FTP server sitting behind a firewall with a static IP on a local only ADSL account, can that server be accessed by clients from overseas?

I would think the answer would be no... because it would need international bandwidth, but am hoping somehow through routing and what not the connection can be made. For instance my server will connected locally to some backbone and the international connection will be made from there.

Am I making sense?

Thanks!

WonderBob, your server has to be connected to an connection with international bandwidth to be able to access it from overseas.
Alternatively you could host a proxy server locally, that has international bandwidth, to allow people from overseas to access the server - but that would be confusing because they would then have to connect to a different IP address.

This would also be possible with a VPN connection, but once again the people from overseas would have to connect to a different IP address, unless you somehow manage to setup the DNS to give the overseas people a different IP address than for the local people.

I'm pretty sure other users on myBB could give you better/more detailed explanations in this regard.

You're right it shouldn't work, you want something like a proxy with international access but who do you think is going to foot the bill for that bandwidth?
