I was thinking of trying out a local only adsl account, in addition to my current Afrihost account, but I had a few questions...

1) is there any local content that justifies this service, surfing on mybroadband cant use that much

2) is there a prepaid option available, so that I dont have to pay every month for the service

I have an old prepaid webafrica account for R19 for 1 GB. Not worth it anymore with afrihost being just R 10 more.

1 is answered many times on this forum, have a look for things like local list etc. (Local List is just a collection of websites that are available on local only)

2: yes there is from Axxess, it costs R12 per GB and I think is good for 12 months. It runs on SAIX, if that means nothing to you then just ignore it for now as unnecessary technical specs ;)

cool thanks- I looked at the list- a lot of the sites seem to be international- such as manga.com, mtv etc- how can these be accessed locally? surely they not hosted here? or am I missing something

I started using Openweb today, which you can buy once off, it was R70 for 10GB, and they also have a R131 - 30GB option. It's on IS though, which isn't as bad as I thought it was (touch wood)

The axxess prepaid I think you can buy from any Engen/Pick n Pay, which is very convenient.

How much bandwidth are you looking to buy and does it matter to you if it is IS or SAIX bandwidth? The reason I ask is because it can sometimes work out cheaper if you buy a plan instead of per gig, but it all depends on how much you want.

I was thinking of buying just a gig and trying it out first- the biggest problem is that I cannot find enough things to download, to justify purchasing any more than that...
for example I followed that "local list" link, and one of the sites mentioned was manga.com. But even with my international access I cant watch anything on their site, as it is only available to people living in the states. So far the only thing I have found that is worth local only internet access for is downloading linux distros :erm: or maybe listen to some local radio stations...

Buying a gig or less than say 5 would be a choice of Axxes then, or a 1 gig IS with 9 gigabytes local IS account.

As soon as it is more, you may want to get a TelkomInternet account that includes local and international access.

Are sign ups to the WA trial still open? If so, you should get one, to see if local is for you. If not, perhaps someone will be willing to give you one, maybe?

Axxess prepaid is a good way to go...and I think it expires in 12 months

My son uses openweb for local only. about R130 for 30 GBs very reasonable.
