a firewall can add some time onto the packet depending on what it does with it

Here's why I suggest a tracertoute:

Tracing route to ftp.saix.net [196.25.240.137]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1
2 9 ms 10 ms 10 ms wbs-192-01.telkomadsl.co.za [165.165.192.1]
3 180 ms 293 ms 310 ms wbs-ip-er-1-fe-12-0-0-1.telkom-ipnet.co.za [196.43.10.46]
4 13 ms 13 ms 11 ms wblv-sr-1-atm-5-0-3.telkom-ipnet.co.za [196.43.11.45]
5 12 ms 13 ms 13 ms ftp.saix.net [196.25.240.137]

Trace complete.

The first hop should be <10ms to your router or you have something broken on your network. The second hop should be around 10ms or so to the first router on the internet.

This 196.25.240.137 address, where is the server located? If its in CPT then your ping is ok, not great but ok. When the pings are under 20ms you can be sure that its a local server... ie same province!

Blob - Yea, I blame that on port shaping/contention ratio calculator - dunno for sure though.

Anybody know of a util that can "Ping" using port 80 / 21 so we can see the shaping/prioritizing difference. I've hunted high and low and cannot find anything.

Saix servers are in cape town, think logically why would they put the server anywhere else when the main int link is cpt.

There is no peace without war!!!

The best pings in South Africa are from Telkom Head Office in Proes Str. to their online banking server.

(yes, thats the real name of their street, be very very careful when copying & pasting that baby or a hidden message might just jump out at you)
