Heres a question: Why do ISP's offer local only bandwidth for browsing local only websites when the local bl00dy website refers to content stored outside SA causing the webpage to never load?

I just wanted to check the w.e weather *http://www.iol.co.za why do I need to wait for adserver.adtech.de to respond...

Any suggestions to how the web server could identify such issues?
Maybe what ever is stored at 'adtech' could be stored locally, instead of in germany?!

Install an adblocker and you should be ok.

thanks, I nearly forgot about that!
just tried it out- installed Mozilla's recommended adblocker. switched back onto local and tried again. very manual process adding blockable elements from iol.co.za cause there could be more than 1!

According to the Adblock history- the elements are dynamically generated, so every time i wanna check the weather i need to add the new address/
Eventually it does load, but without any pretty weather pictures that show clouds/sunshine or rain!
Not very efficient so back to the starting block.

Even dynamic links needs some consistency...

You're blocking http://adserver.adtech.de/....blank;grp=43;misc=1203717598, but next time its http://adserver.adtech.de/....blank;grp=43;misc=1603717296, so thus it wont work? Use your brain. Whats the common part in the link? 'adserver.adtech.de'! So Block it!
& adsfeed.brabys.com
& adsrv.iol.co.za

What adblock are you using for firefox? I'm using ABP (Ad Block Plus). I just went to IOL for the first time ever on my local account and it loaded quick, without problem of trying to get ads from international sites. Were do you see the weather in IOL? I prefer www.weathersa.co.za.

With ABP you can subscribe to a list of ad servers for ABP to block. Just go to ABP's Preferences and click on Filters - Add filter subscription and select a filter subscription from the drop down box. I use EasyList and I very seldom block ads manually. Can't even remember when last I did.

I am also using ad block plus... with the adblock filterset.G updater extension... it automatically updates your block lists for you.

I can access both IOL and News24 no problems.

Must say that www.weathersa.co.za is also my preferred site.

I stay away from IOL simply because of all their ads.
News24 I just about manage to look at for a few seconds.

I get all the news I need from this site's frontpage - everything else I need comes from Off Topic :p :D

My complaint is with Aardvark.co.za which is supposed to be a South African search directory. Most of the links are out of date and the other half are not, in fact, South African sites. Surfing Aardvark with a local only account is an exercise in frustration!

Another dead loss is Tucows.co.za, simply points you back to Tucows.com... again no good for local only accounts.

Tucows is great for local only accounts! There is always a local mirror for a file on there.

no, I just went there cos the address popped uninvited into my head! I must be psychic or something.

Shame - Must be a pain to be like that :p

If you have used tucows before, and paid attention, you would've known this. Lets take an example:

I want to download this: http://www.tucows.com/preview/314743
So I click on download - then it gives me this:
www.tucows.com said:
If your download does not start automatically, choose a download location to start your download.

And I click on there and low and behold, I can now decide to download this file from the University of Stellenbosch's Tucows Mirror!

um... and how exactly would I visit that link if I am using a local only account like I mentioned in my earlier post?

Thanks for the help anyway. I found some stuff over here... gonna check it out!

You use your normal account, it all about the files you can then download using your local account and not your international one.

http://ftp.sun.ac.za

OK... but that's still quite a schlep to have to do it that way. My point was that "mirrored content" should be fully accessible to local only accounts. A lot of guys don't have access to intl accounts until the month kicks over again. Thanks anyway.
