I found some local site seems to isp as international.
How does isp know if *.co.za or dstv.com is local or not.
thanks

Huh, have no idea what you are asking. If the server is sitting in SA it is local, anywhere else it is international, as simple as that. .co.za and .com has no effect on local or international. i.e. some .co.za sites can be hosted oversees and some .com sites can be hosted in SA. My site aalwyne.co.za sits in the US somewhere.

So say my cap runs out and only local time left, how does Telkom and mozilla knows this site is local, and I may open it. So its basicly the technical part that I want to know. And Willemvdm, why is your server in the USA.

because Telkom locks your internet down to local IP ranges when you run out of international cap.

Mozilla has no idea ;) its all done by the ISP (ie Telkom).

You can think of it like this:
Telkom has a firewall just before the undersea cable that connects to the rest of the world. When you reach your cap you connection is marked in a specific way. Any traffic with this mark is not allowed through the firewall.

Not sure about the technical aspect, but as far as I know, your IP changes as soon as you are capped and international is blocked according to that. But ambo's firewall analogy is probably best way to look at it schroniska.
Yes it is cheaper in the US. Compare R120 per year to about R120 per month . What I can't understand is why the web host must pay for bandwidth and the internet user must pay for it too. That mean Telkom get paid double for the same packet of information send from server to client, that's not right.

You can also check out whois.co.za to see where the site is hosted if it's a co.za domain

Please can you explain how whois.co.za can tell me where the site is hosted. It only lists the DNS servers.

every computer connected to the internet has what is called an ip address. You could compare it to a telephone number where the area code indicates where the call is coming from. eg. Cape town is 021.
