Dunno if this should go here or in the software section but I'll give it a shot anyway.

Mate runs an application on his Win7 laptop that has the option to send invoices to clients via but only supports open smtp (so no option for authentication & ssl as required by gmail).

I don't want to set him up to use vodamail smtp server as this would introduce another email address to his clients with a return to path he won't be checking. You also can't specify a different return to address.

So I'm thinking maybe I could setup a smtp relay server/daemon on his pc that then interacts with the gmail server providing the required authentication. This way the clients will see his normal email address as sender and return path.

1. Is this possible?
2. Any small/freeware daemons/servers (that runs at startup) with easy configuration you can recommend.
3. If he send mail offline the mails must be retained by the daemon/server and be sent automatically immediately when a connection is established.

I don't even want him to see this process or be involved with it as he's not tech savvy.

For now I have him setup to print to pdf and mail the invoices manually.

depends on what ISP he is using.
Vodacom : smtp.vodacom.co.za
or Vodacom : smtp.vodamail.co.za
Mtn : mail.mtn.co.za
Cell C : smtp.cellc.co.za
Iburst : smtp.wbs.co.za
or Iburst : smtp.iburst.co.za
Sentech : smtp.sentechsa.com
@lantic: mail.lantic.net
Telkom : mail.telkomsa.net
ADSL : smtp.saix.net

You can spoof whatever email addy you want with these

Check whether his ISP allows authentication free relaying. If so, then you should be able to just configure the From address of the billing application to be his regular gmail address.

It may be routed via his usual ISP (Vodacom?), but replies would go to his return address (i.e. gmail).

this will work, but only for a short while as over time these servers will start detecting the mails as "unsolicited bulk email" im still trying to find a solution for this...

Ok thanks. Will give that a try but so far I'm not receiving any of the test mails via the ISP smtp server.
