setup is simple.

streaming from macbook pro > wifi router > apple tv (router and apple tv connected via ethernet cable) > av receiver (hdmi between apple tv and av receiver) > speakers .

so here the wifi leg is simply between macbook pro and wifi router - the rest continues by cable.

herein lies the mystery:
using my regular user account we have this:

but if i log out of my account and into a different user account, playing the very same track out of a shared itunes library, we have this:

i have repeated the switchover between accounts, always rendering the same result.
ive taken a look in "activity monitor" to see if there is some other application / browser / update running in the background - but nothing.
the itunes shared library is simply shared between user accounts on the same laptop.

this strange anomaly does not affect anything at all, but is a curiosity.
being a curious person, i'm seeking some kind of explanation as to why this happens when switching user accounts.

any ideas ?

Shared iTunes library on the same machine? Or Shared from somewhere else?

And how exactly is it shared?

That counter is overall bandwidth though, you’d need to look at specifically where the origin of the bandwidth usage is individually, which you should see under networking in Activity Monitor.

Should be noted the tool itself is configured differently per account so it’s not an exact comparison and could very well be the tool itself tracking different things.

Maybe look for transcoding presets in the preferences? The one may be lossless and the other transcoded as a high bitrate.

itunes library on one mac, shared between 2 user accounts on same machine.

**not shared as in shared across network, but shared in that the "itunes media folder location" in the 2nd user account points to the itunes media folder location" in the primary account.

so within itunes preferences on both user accounts, one has the same itunes media folder location:

ta
will dig deeper into activity monitor

The one has the song already cached / stored in memory, the other not.

Does the second one work if you switch of your network (not the router)

It’s much simpler than that. The data transfer measurements are different. One is measuring KiloBytes per second and the other Megabits per second. There are 1000 kilobits in a megabit and 8 bits in a byte. 1000/8 =125. So divide KB/s by 125 to get Mb/s. The data transfer rates are almost the same.

If it weren’t the track would stutter on one account while not on the other.
