Local traffic shaping software or suggestion pls :)

Just a quick question.

I am the only gamer here but my Internet connection is shared with 5 others who always time me out everytime they browse web pages, I would like to know if there is any easy way to prioritise my gaming to avoid spikes.

I have googled a bit but most solutions require a hefty fee and require one to setup a server, mainly for business related purposes.

I would just like to know if I as a true and honest online gaming fan can stop everyone else giving me these spikes everytime they consult uncle google :)

I have ADSL 512 and it is in bridged mode for everyone to use their own accounts (if that information is any helpful :))

Suggestions welcome.

EDIT: I don't know if this belongs here or in the gaming section as any possible solution could also be useful for other broadband users I suppose.

Thanks ic but I believe both of those options do require a server or some PC that everyone's traffic moves through. I don't have the kind of resources to buy and setup another PC anywhere, I can only just maintain my own :p

As I am simply a part of the LAN and only require this for gaming purposes I don't want to go to extensive trouble and just wondered if there was a simple solution.

I thought to go through the router settings to see if I can prioritise ports or something but nowhere in the router do I see any such setting, although others speak of it with different routers.

The router does have a firewall but I would think that as it is in bridged mode that cancels the firewall out.

I honestly think in my situation this is impossible to do but I thought to ask anyway :p
 
You say you're already running bridged mode on your modem, that means you could feasibly stick an Old Faithful :p, give it a decent personality and set it up to not only give you QoS, but optimised for gaming too. This is likely to sort you out for not a lot of money AND give you wi-fi too, if you don't already have it there.

Now to use my brain a bit :p

You see our network is so:

<MYPC>--<PC>--<PC>--<PC>--<SWITCH>--[<ADSL ROUTER>]--<WRTG ROUTER>--<PC>--<PC> ~~ <LAPTOP>

Neither the router nor the linksys WRTG router belongs to me although I pay most line rental and my own ISP fees. Both users going through the WRTG router still use ethernet cable and not wireless and it is only just out of range for me to pick up signal, the laptop which one brings from work occasionally uses the wi-fi. From ADSL ROUTER to the right is all located in the other house on the same plot. The people there are family.

So it is not my place to go and swap the hardware around either :(

Thats why I suspected in my situation this is not possible.

Well thanks for the suggestion though I will see if I can maybe work something out.

Maybe I should just beg them to stop googling during my game time lol :)
