Supposed connectivity problem on my side had been going on for about 3 weeks+. As soon as I switched to the main server in the US, stuck OS updates started sorting themselves out and others joined in.

Have seen similar in the last couple of years.

Will still switch back though when undersea cables get damaged yet again. That's African life I guess 🤷‍♂️

The local ubuntu mirrors are kept a few places, which one is down?

Ah I see since IS fizzled it's only Tenet who seems to have a mirror

Gets weird now - the main server is currently faulty

So decided to switch to the UK server offered at the front of the list, and that's working....
No idea which UK mirror that may be as it's not labelled when picked from there, it's just called "Server for United Kingdom"

Sure it's not your own DNS?
Using a default DNS set by Windscribe VPN, but bypassing that app made no difference and methinks the "successes" since yesterday suggest an error their side - although that would mean amazing timing on my part.

Can you ping them at all?

What does the failure look like?

My Ubuntu boxes on the default ZA stuff are all fine.

Windscribe being in the business of region dodging is likely exactly where the issue are coming from.

Code:
nslookup {ubuntu server} {DNS server IP}

Willing to bet you get vastly different results using 1.1.1.1

Or if you are actively using the VPN while trying to do it the odds are they simply block out of region traffic.

The FQDN generally rotates/load balances between all the available mirrors.

I suppose I could look up the IP's involved, but haven't pinged for years so will rather see what develops

I'll post a pic when I get it again - looks quite ordinary though, no error codes or anything like that.

Windscribe was fully disabled for one of the attempts, not involved here.

Command line will likely give you way more output if there’s something wrong.

No doubt but I'm still fairly new to Linux. I'm an old DOS man :- )

Just tried switching back to ubuntu.mirror.ac.za/ubuntu - now working, and that with Windscribe active in all regards.
I'm suspecting something got stuck and my fiddle caused it to resolve, although the main server not working earlier today says not entirely. Let's see what happens next,

if nothing heard, all good.

Next turns out to be that either the router is having issues or MTN are servicing their tower's LTE service, has needed a reset for 3 days in a row and a few incidents before that.

I'll leave it alone for a week, then see further.

That's a weird hostname it should be http://za.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu

I suspect because you are using that URI it's not re-directing to other available mirrors as it should be doing.

Something is very weird with your DNS or the routing of your ISP if Indonesia is considered best.
DNS server is part of the ROBERT setup on Windscribe. As for my chosen VPN IP server, that's kept in Jo'burg normally.
Addy for info on ROBERT: https://windscribe.com/features/robert/

I'll run an update server test again now with the VPN off.......
