Ok since the regulation has been passed that makes local traffic uncapped is there people that is running local P2P networks yet?

Uncapped yes, but you're going to have to pay for anything over 10GB local for ever 1GB international bandwidth you buy I think.

So it's not really uncapped...

Nope
the official ruling says that local can not count towards a cap at all

so they can't charge you for it

at least this is the info I got.

Well apaprently they will still charge you. At R25.50 per GB of local bandwidth IIRC.

Telkom for you :D

PS. There are many threads here about the new capping policies which happened in November IIRC. Maybe you should do some searching, or maybe someone else can provide the links.

How we wish the regs were interpreted and how telkom did interpret them are sadly leagues apart.

I hope you can get your money back from the lawyer who advised you.

NEW capping policy w.e.f 1 February 2008 ~ Once your service threshold and collective threshold have been exceeded, you will be placed within your allocated Local Only bandwidth which is on promotion. As you will not be capped on local bandwidth, we reserve the right to bill you for anything exceeding the allocated local bandwidth that is on promotion. The charge for local bandwidth is R25,55 per gig. If you desire international surfing you can top-up your current username with additional blended bandwidth.

Furthermore, only Telkom provide the "uncapped" bandwidth. The other ISPs, as a rule, do not. (Although you can get quite a bit of it quite cheaply from Cybersmart, I think.)

*giggles ....do try pushing TelkomInternet PAST your allocated local . Gonna get a nice bill at the end of month.

ok I seem to have made one mistake in the interpretation

but I know for a fact that MWEB from the 1'st of FEB runs it that once your cap is used you can continue using local traffic as much as you want. (free of charge)

which is the same as it use to be.

I just found this article which states that they can not cap local although they seem to have found a loophole that means that your local traffic can count towards your international cap.

so if you have a 1GB international account you can use as much as you want local but it will count towards that 1GB so your international will be cut off quickly.

Tested and working as specified.

just make sure that the auto boost function is not enabled.

How are Mweb doing this? There is a wholesale price for local, Telkom are not supplying it free nevermind what the regs say.

I doubt they plan to keep this active if many users catch on.

They probably think there's not much to download locally ;)

My dad still 'clings' to his Mweb account, but he's away for the month, so I guess I'll have to do so some 'testing' of my own :D

i heard that once uve reached ur international cap, u still have local bw, but you are charged from the second you use it.. above someone mentioned only after 10gb's?

is that true? only after 10gb local bw used do they start charging the 25 or so rand per gig...? or is it immediately as ur capped internationally?

For each 1 GB of your account you get 10GB free local bandwidth after your cap. e.g. A 3 GB account gets 30GB free local bandwidth, any usage in excess of that is billed at a rate of R25.55 per GB :)

EDIT: What I am talking about is on promotion for an unspecified length of time, when the promotion ends then things are going to be exactly like you said...

Here is the exact wording on the Mweb website:

What do I do once my data cap is reached?

Good news for all MWEB ADSL customers. As of 1 February 2008, MWEB is launching a trial program offering local-only bandwidth to customers who reach their data cap limit - which means you can enjoy continued access to Internet services hosted in South Africa after you use up your monthly data.*

For the duration of the trial, you will be able to access local websites, services and content free of charge whenever you exceed your cap . Local-only bandwidth refers to websites and Internet services hosted in South Africa, i.e. data is transferred from South African-based sources.

This means that if you reach your ADSL cap, you will still be able to:

* send and receive your MWEB e-mail as usual
* surf any website hosted in South Africa
* Continue to access your local Internet banking

... all at no additional cost to you!

Can anyone see a loophole here?

Well, I guess we won't know for sure until the end of the month.
I'm afraid to use any local in case it's gonna show up on my bill.
