The results of four different statistical surveys published by Statistics SA within a few days all told the same story: devastation of economic activity and of people’s ability to earn a living. None of the industries covered by the four surveys escaped the damage brought on by the forced Covid-19 lockdown.

The reports covered sales and income in the motor trade industry, tourist accommodation, the transport industry, and food and beverage sectors. The figures show that all suffered severely during the quarter to end June.

April and May were the worst months, followed by a slight recovery in June. However, activity in June remained far below normal levels.

All going to plan.
We will come back to the need for immediate steps to be taken in the post apartheid period to break the economic stranglehold of the monopolies and to transform a major portion of wealth from private into social property. Suffice it to say that such measures will, of necessity, result in an immediate sizeable contraction of the private sector. Ninety nine per cent of this sector is presently owned and controlled by white capitalists; a race monopoly which constitutes the key instrument of national domination.

Better to have let the virus do the devastating ?

The level of stupidity never ceases to amaze me.

1 month (April) hard lock down with then opening from 1 May, as per current level 2 restrictions. Fighting the virus while at least sustaining the economy as best possible.

Yes, absolutely, we should go back to level 5 until the virus goes extinct.

Also, after that, we should remain in lv5 lockdown so that TB can also be eradicated. I mean in 2018 alone 63 000 South Africans died of TB related causes. That's only in 2018, think of the deaths before that, and in 2019 etc.

Oh, and for our newly created Nosophobians out there:
It is estimated that about 80% of the population of South Africa is infected with TB bacteria, the vast majority of whom have latent TB rather than active TB cases.

But don't worry, those ever so efficient government departments with their highly killed hard working "public servants" got full salary... so all is good.

We all know its been a horrible mess but there are still the occasional events which drive it home.

I was out and about at around lunch time yesterday, and at a robot nearish to my house was a guy sitting in a chair with a sign "Unemployed due to Lockdown - IT Engineer Please Help with any sort of work"... and just the guys whole demeanor showed he literally had no hope left. Just drives it home how much of a complete cock up this lockdown has been.

To wit: R2.5mil per month for reading newspapers and books ...

Likely one third of GDP wiped out for 2020. I believe an economic knock of that magnitude is unprecedented in South African history. The effects will play out for years, and they will not be pretty.

VIVA stupidity!

Fark the future. Fark the kids. Vote cANCer!

All of the devastation, ruined business and lives, are worth it since lives were saved!

What you expect Government to do? Sit back and watch the bodies pile up in the streets? Government saved, and is still saving, us from this destructive virus!

Yeah 13 000 deaths in 5 months. The virus would have been devastating if all we did was take the relevant precautions

But no we had to shut the entire country down
i agree 100%. Mask, Sanitzers, work from home etc... not this full lockdown etc crap we had. The damage is now self inflicted... thanks to government

Entire industries killed off, for the amount of people killed on the road in a year.

We should have lockdowns for road deaths, or actually TB..

The World Health Organisation estimates that 124,000 people died of TB in South Africa in 2016 (about 330 daily). It is the country's leading cause of death, and has been made much worse by the HIV epidemic: over 80% of people who died of TB in 2016 were also infected with HIV.

13k it is insignificant.. and they killed our economy for that.
