Logical drives on an external HDD?

I just got a Vizo Luxon Advanced IDE+SATA USB/ESATA enclosure.

The only drive I have to test with atm is an old WD 7GB. My normal practice is to create logical disks for everything but my Windows partition, but using the enclosure for some reason I could only create a primary partition in disk management.

Is this normal for enclosures? Maybe just due to the old disk drive? I will be getting a 1TB for it, if it still won't let me create logical disks on that can anyone see a problem with creating the logical disk/s with the drive attached internally and then putting it into the enclosure?

Does anyone know of any possible problems using an external with multiple partitions? Don't think there would be any but just checking. I thought I might install an OS to a small partition as an emergency boot OS or something like that.

Should I be worried that my enclosure has no active cooling?

I have been running a diagnostics test on my HDD in it and the drive has gotten pretty hot in the 6 and a half hours it's been going, also the controller chip is very hot. Too hot to keep my finger on for more than 2-3 seconds.

Can anyone comment on the lifespan of external drives without active cooling?

Interestingly, my external enclosure doesn't get too hot.

It all depends on the HDD make, model and speed.

Well seeing as it has been running almost 7 hours straight it's not that surprising, the drive itself is quite warm but I think it's probably acceptable. The chip is way hotter.

BTW I'm feeling the drive itself not the case of the enclosure as it's open. It's a WD Caviar Black 1TB.

Has anyone had experience with Seagate Freeagent externals? A friend had one die, it got unacceptably hot IMO, and from some internet research it seems he wasn't the only one. Would never buy one of those I don't think.

Depends on the enclosure, some have no vents and get really hot. I prefer enclosures with vents and space around the drive.

I like my external enclosure. It's aluminium so the whole thing is the heatsink. I'd guess a lot work like that. So it's ok that the enclosure gets hot.

Are you plugging the drive using usb or esata?

The one I have has an aluminium shell, a few vents in the bottom.

Have tried both, but mainly using esata as it's faster, doesn't seem like the interface makes much difference to temps though I could be wrong, I haven't tested extensively.

Thinking of getting one with active cooling instead, any recommendations?
