Login details before line installation

So on Tuesday morning I applied for my phone and Adsl line to be installed. Got a 4mb line with 20gig soft cap. Free installation and router etc...

Anyway, I haven't heard from anybody for the line installation yet but Telkom sends me an sms with my Username and Telkom email and password.

Is this normal? And are they going to charge me from now or from when the technician sets it up?
 
Going to charge you for the 20GB softcap from now, line charge when it is installed. Same happened to me and had to lodge billing dispute to get it fixed.
 
I know uncapped account do get prorata'ed but I don't think capped accounts are. So it shouldn't make a difference.
 
Now I keep getting the "your order receiving attention" sms. Got it 3 times this morning.

If it was receiving so much attention, then I should've had a call haha!
 
Yeah I'm not too worried cos I'll smash the 20 gigs no problem. Just the line rental etc...

Line rental will only be charged once the techie did his thing at the exchange and you did a self install/Telkom installed it

Yes, the idea being that you have the details when the technician arrives, so you have working internet when he leaves.

And are they going to charge me from now or from when the technician sets it up?

As far as I know, if it was a bundle, the bundle should only start billing once the technician marks the installation task as completed on the dispatching system. At worst, you may be billed for the internet account only.
