My only gripe is that this remote doesn’t feel as responsive as the devices’ proprietary remotes, but it does make it easier to control the numerous devices connected to my TV.

Almost all home theatre setups these days suffer from the same problem: remote control clutter. This unfortunate side effect is as a result of multiple devices each requiring a unique remote control to operate.

Universal remotes have been around for years, but only recently have I discovered a product that actually works with all my devices. The Logitech Harmony One Remote can be programmed to replace up to 15 remotes, and its large colour LCD adds even more functionality than what you’d expect. For one thing, you can create events that will automatically perform a few tasks when you press a single button.

This means you can program this remote to switch on your Xbox 360, TV, and speakers with a single click. Configuring this remote requires an Internet connection, as it gets most of its device settings from profiles created by Logitech and other Harmony One users. During setup, I quickly found profiles for all my devices, including my DStv PVR. Even though the installation and configuration do get a little tricky at times, I managed to successfully replace every remote for my home theatre setup. My only gripe is that this remote doesn’t feel as responsive as the devices’ proprietary remotes, but it does make it easier to control the numerous devices connected to my TV.
