I have been in the marker for a universal remote to replace all my other ones, I have the following devices

32" Sinotec HD Ready LCD TV
Multichoice DSTV HD PVR
AC Ryan Essential Media Player
Xbox 360 + Kinect

I stumbled across the Logitech Harmony Remote 300i I am hoping that this remote can be the solution to my remote confusion at home :p

I need the remote to control EVERYTHING (mentioned above) including the Xbox )DVD and Media).

If you have a Logitech Harmony Remote 300 or knows of someone who does and can give me a nice run down of the pro's and cons of this device it will be a great help.

thanks guys

Just bough a 650 and they're pretty awesome. Takes quite a bit of time to tweak it properly but will have the basic running quickly enough. You must check all of your models on their database otherwise you'll have to set up all the buttons manually. There's a web interface for managing/programming the remote but I ended up using the installed application that you can download from the Logitech website. Not sure which models that software supports though.

i was wanting to get the same remote but found out how to properly setup the HD PVR remote and it works great. no need to buy a universal remote.... dunno if it works with the media player though.

I've got the Harmony 300i and the 985. While the 300 does work fine, I've do have a few issues. It only allows 4 devices, where the 985 allows a lot more. The 985 has motion sensing, so when I pick it up, it lights up (no backlit option on the 300 without pressing a button). The 985 has rechargeable batteries (a good thing, considering that the light go on a lot). The button layout on the 985 just feels more natural than the 300. Find myself quite frequently having to adjust the remote in my hand to press buttons.

Setting it up with the HD PVR was no problem and it works ok. If you've got the extra cash, get an 985 or something in that range. Maybe even the Harmony One. Otherwise, R200 for the 300 isn't that bad and at least beats having 4 different remotes.

The installed application can be downloaded from the logitech website. Provides the same functionality as the web application but with some more advanced features and customization (such as executing command sequences on startup) but obviously making it more complicated to set up. With great power ...

The 650 is quite a good upgrade from the 300: has sensor that turns on LCD when picked up (not as awesome as accelerometer but works well) and all buttons are backlit that goes on and off with the LCD. Can control 5 devices and cost less than R500 (retail).

Was also using the HD PVR remote but the harmony adds some cool features: turning devices on and off with one button (e.g. switching decoder off and DVD player on) as well as controlling the PS3 (with associated IR to bluetooth adapter). Also, not a fan of the ffwd/rew button :D

Awesome!
I didnt know the HD PVR remote can be used as a universal remote.
Where would I go about finding the instructions for this?
I searched the DSTV site and came up short...

After checking out the 300i compared to the 900 I will have to go for the 300i. The price range from R 188 - R 285. The 900 is just ridiculous some places are selling it for R 2300+ according to Pricecheck.co.za. Thank you everyone for the help and advice.

http://www.mediafire.com/?w51t1j6fl0iobef for the list of codes, and http://www.mediafire.com/?yacynahyr18i4fx for the quick reference guide, assuming I didn't cock up the mediafire upload. Failing that, check on the DSTv forum - you'll have to register and log in to see the links posted there though.

Comparing a Chevy Spark with a Ferrari.

Do you know there are Toyota and Ford?

The 650 is a good product, almost no complaints from me.
+1

I'm very happy with the 650, and considering the price (just priced it at R700 at Sounds Great Woodlands, Pretoria for a friend) decent value too. Good point made above about the 300 device limit- the 650 only gives one extra.
