So my TV licence expires on the 1st of September, and since I never received a reminder, and have been quite swamped by work, I totally forgot to pay it.

Got a viciously poisonous letter from said entity today. Stating that "The account is now overdue! and it is accumulating penalty interest at the rate of 10% per every month"

"should we not receive payment by 30/10/2008 it will be handed over to our attorneys for legal action and you will be held liable for the legal costs! Should judgement be granted against you your name and details will be listed against all majoir credit bureaus which may prevent you from obtaining any consumer credit for several years"

Now firstly, is 10%/month penalty interest even legal? hell even loan sharks are limited to charging 3%/month by the NCA and MFRC.

Secondly the spewing of poison for a princely amount of R225 is laughable at best. What happened to sending a reminder to pay said licence, or a polite letter stating that you are late and asking for payment?

I am actually tempted to get my lawyer to write them an equally rancid letter back, telling them to shove it.

Now I have no problem in paying the TV licence, if I am reminded or asked politely, but the sheer arrogance, tone and audacity of their threats has to be outside of the realms of the law at some stage.

Fk them. I don't pay TV license as it's NOT the right thing to do.

I only took out a license once when I bought the last TV. and never paid it since, they post me a letter every now and again also. I store them and use them to start my fires for when I braai :D

I pay my TV license religiously every year, heck I even once tried to pay for two TVs (but they just credited me for an extra year).

Having said that I never actually watch SABC. I think I might have watched about ten minutes of it in the last year. So don't ask me why I actually pay it. There is nothing on there that I want to watch. It has no appeal for me as a viewer.

I paid mine last year when I bought a new TV....

I have since moved, and the place I live now has a TV license already so I no longer pay.. They can stuff it if they think I'll renew it when I don't need to. And the process to prove you don't need one is stupidly ridiculous, so i'm just not going to bother... They need to prove I need one not the other way round in my opinion.

The problem is that you require a licence to own a TV set, no matter what you choose to watch on TV.

Rather pay it. You don't want to be blacklisted because you are stubborn or trying to prove them a point! They feel absolutely nothing for us and they've got the "LAW" behind them (Bastards!)...

Rather pay it, but do get your lawyer to check out the rates they are charging you and getting back at them for not following the correct procedures.

1. Telephone call requesting payment and a date.
2. Letter reminding you of payment and ADVISING you to pay as soon as possible.
3. Final letter of demand (the one you just got).

Their process is up to BULLCRAP and they need to be made aware of this...

Im still confused why a TV licence is required , i thought adverts would be the main income generating medium , like radio stations . Why do we need a license to own a TV set ?

The SABC is battling its backside off to get people to pay their licenses. They ought to just add it to your taxes or something.

pay to receive spam and propaganda. its the right thing to do.
is there a way to remove the tuner from my tv? so its just a screen with speakers for my dvd player

Haha, this is such a clever idea. If you do manage to get that right, PM me, i've got 3 tv's that needs "tuning" :D

You can get it denatured, but then you have to pay R350 odd to the SABC for them to come check the TV and give you a piece of paper that says you don't have to pay the license.. which of course they'll lose anyway and still charge you.

+1. I will NOT pay for a TV license, not as long as some fool is watching TV without a license somewhere in Zone B in Langa on MY TV that was stolen!

I normally get an account sent via mail but this year I didn't receive it. I then got an SMS from them a few weeks ago, paid the fee online but never received the receipt via email. I sent their call centre an email requesting the receipt but nobody bothered to reply. So the SABC's processes are clearly dodgy at best.
The bottom line is you need a valid licence to buy a TV.

What if you sold your TV or gve it to someone or your tv is broken? Do you still have to pay the damn license?

No TV, no license. This is pretty obvious. But as soon as you watch TV or own a TV, you are expected to pay. I f0kcing refuse to pay BS.

They should have some sort of method for instances like this given that SO many TV's get stolen everyday. So they should have a manner of handling this...

Who do you suggest we contact regarding this?

Buy a Monitor. You can buy a 50 inch LCD/plasma monitor sans tuner
and connect to your DVD/Bluray/DSTV that way.

Sadly if you watch DSTV you need to pay TVLic because DSTV shows
SABC channels.
