Hi Guys,

A friend and I live in the same complex, but in different flats. We live about 50-60m away from each other with a few walls between us. Thing is, we want to set up a long distance wireless network (if that is even possible). As far as I know, a WUG-kit would be the only effective solution.

What I'm asking is if there are other better solutions, and if not, are there any WUG kits that can be used without needing to mount it to a wall? I don't think our body corporate will take too kindly to us drilling holes in the buildings...

I'm lucky enough in my complex that one of the body corporate trustees are a serious WUGger, so he managed to install an omnidirectional antenna in the middle of the complex. Both he and I have Nanostations (mine in my garage) that connects to it - so nothing on my own walls. The omni connects to the WUG highsite as it has LOS.

We used the central dish / TV antenna for it - works well.

Don't know the exact equipment, will have to find out.

If you have a balcony set up the antennae on some sort of stand ( tripod ) and disguise it as a pot plant or some thing

Obviously I don't know the layout of your building, but a 50m network cable out the window and over the roof can work quite nicely.

Yeah... No... Not going to work. We live in one complex which consists of various buildings with "roads" (aka paving) in-between... Else I would have done this no problem!

would this "bullet" antenna setup then look like this

Wireless Router connected to RouterBoard SXT 5GHz 11n 16dBi CPE @ Point A ----> Wireless Router connected to RouterBoard SXT 5GHz 11n 16dBi CPE @ Point B?

You plug the RB SXT into whatever you have at your side with a CAT5/6 cable, a lan cable will be running to the SXT, be it from a hub/switch/wireless AP/Wireless router, as long as a cable runs to it on your end and same on the other end.

The 2 RB's will only be used to create the wireless link between the flats, so you will not connect to them with your laptop/wireless router(not through wireless), a cable will run from a lan port on your wireless Router to the lan port on the SXT...

thanks @Shanwstar!

these RB SXT bables look awesome, now to find some 2nd hand cheapies....

Yeah, thanks @Shanwstar! They are rather expensive though... Don't think my stingy friend will fork out R700 bucks for this... Let the convincing begin!

I have 2 SXTs for a 2.2km link, mine do about 70-80Mbit both ways or 140Mbit 1way actual throughput, limited by the 100mbit ethernet connection though.

They can't really do 5km unless you'll be happy with low single digit throughput and instability.

They need clear line of sight as they are 5GHz and directional. So they might connect through walls but the signal quality will be poor, low unstable ccq.

If you want to connect through walls you should be using an omni directional antenna, not a directional one as you will be relying on the signal bouncing around off objects to reach its destination. Also 2.4GHz will be better if there is no LOS.

The SXT is 14cm in diameter, get the small adjustable mount and just put it up neatly outside tucked under the roof, nobody will notice and if they do its easier to ask forgiveness than to get permission in a complex. Nobody noticed mine, in my complex and its been a year now.

Thanx @DanH! I went ahead and asked them permission anyway, and they gave it. So I can do what you suggest legally. Thanks to everyone who helped with some ideas.
