Hello All,
Would it be possible (in some way) to construct my own long range sender/receiver ? Would I need a license ? I live as the crow flies at least 5km from the exchange. I live in a rural part of Limpopo province (Ellisras), which has a very low population density.
What/which alternatives do I have for uncapped low latency internet ?
I live on a farm outside town, apparently out of reach of the one and only exchange in the district.
I have HSDPA, works fine at 400k p/sec but too bad I usually finish my 3gb cap withing about 90 minutes. Ridiculously expensive.
I currently have a long range wireless installed provided by a local small business who's been setting up the stuff all over the district. Apparently it's on the 5,8Ghz frequency. It's a 256k connection which I find totally inadequate as I get timeouts when me and my wife surf together. Having lived in EU for 10 years I was used to truely uncapped, low latency 16mb broadband. My data use was at least 300Gb p/month ! Imagine now I'm stuck with 256k, which is almost as bad as dial-up.
Today I asked the provider that I would want a faster line. I was assured that I can get a dedicated link to my house at SA's (pathetic) max speed of only 4mb but the line was via Telkom. Having checked out Telkom's uncapped prices it seems mad ridiculous expensive.
There's rumoured to be a Wi-max tower appearing some time this year in Ellisras, apparently from Screamer but I haven't been able to get any confirmation anywhere.
Would there be any other way to get uncapped ? My provider says thte line is with Telkom, do I have to stick with ridiculous expensive Telkom ? Can I choose my own provider ? Can I set up my own link ? Is this long range wi-fi nothing other than just that, a ADSL router connected to a DSL line with the transmit/receive antenna on the roof pointed to the destination and wi-fi transmitted over long range? What would be the max range to keep the stable link as I've had past troubles with unstable link ?
There is no wireless user group in our area.
