What wireless routers are there out there with the longest range i.e. that can cover the widest possible footprint legally? And typically what would be the range of such devices? Any info will be appreciated. Thank you.

802.11n type router/ AP comes to mind....

What you using it for?

EDIT:

What is the typical distance you are looking at covering?
What are the user requirements?
What equipment will users have? Will they have built-in wifi cards or directional antenna's?
What coverage are you looking for? Area wise? Like 360 degrees around a single point or what?

Thanks for the clarification request. The requirement is to get as much coverage as possible within a residential complex so that multiple tenants within the complex can share the same wifi connection. I assume this would mean that only built in wifi cards will be used by users with the best cost / value benefit for the wifi transmitter(s).

I am interested in the same thing, I would like to put-up a sort of hotspot in a gated community but everybody pays the same amount each month and they get the same cap on one line(when Telkom upgrades there lines)

Thanks. What sort of 360 degree range could one expect from such a device?

Free space, no buildings in the way tested 300m on iPhone & laptop ideally not more 50-100m. iPhone had better reception and worked till about 350m till we ran out of road.
Also Picostation was stuck behind an office window too.

http://www.skyrove.com use the Picostations for their hotspots reflashed with
OLSR meshing software & other pieces added on. I am oretty impressed.
Do not just take my word buy 1 and test them for youself.

They are outdoor units, but seal up any possibilities of water ingress
and if your 220v fluctuates like on my Vicbay webcam, been blowing
power supplies, voltage spikes to 290v, stupid move not to put the
wireless kit on a UPS, but should be OK now

Cheers
