I dont have so much money to invest but we have about R10k for now.

what would be the best options ?

its for my son and we would lke to take it out after around 16 years

we would also like to add more money into it year on year

maybe even month by month

Someone told me a unit trust, but they also not doing too well

And how would i go about investing, who do i contact and bla bla

EasyEquities. They have baskets and bundles now if you're looking for something that's managed or if you want others to have done the research for you. If you're willing to participate in Stock Watch here on MyBB and enjoy that sort of thing, even better - you can buy shares on your own there too.

Personally I would got with either unit trusts or ETFs, 50% local/50% foreign, that invests in shares, given that time frame.

By foreign I just mean a Rand fund/EFT but that invests it in foreign markets.

You can look at Easy Equities for ETFs. Can even have it in minors name.

i dont want to be hands on, should i ask a broker to help ?

You could but considering you're going to invest a lump sum once a year or so the "hands on" is not that much to be honest.

1. Open EE account
2. Deposit money
3. Buy MAPPSG ETF

Done. That's the simplist way to go. If you want to be more diverse and add foreign investment, buy 60% MAPPSG and 40% DBXWD (or CSP500). Can't think of a less complicated way doing it.

Open a EasyEquities account in your sons name you can sign and have control of it as a guardian.

I firmly believe The US will still continue to grow 16 years from now so I would buy DBXWD.

At the same time 16 years, China might make a shift adopt bitcoins ask the US to audit the federal reserves the world sees the US lied about their gold, world loses faith in the dollar, dollar collapse China show they have been under reporting their gold and they own most of the words bitcoins.

Booom! China overtakes the US as the new Super economy.

Last week Bloomberg chose SA as their No. 2 choice after Russia for the best countries to invest in for 2017.
Goldman Sachs chose the ZAR as the best investment currency for 2017.

So keep it SA. Last year many investors chose to invest in the USD and world ETF's and now they are kicking their butts as the ZAR powers onwards despite my posting the above warning never mind saying so a year ago.

I called the ZAR at 13.5 at year end and it happened. :) I am also grateful that the Euro has declined by 23% since 2016 so I am so much better off here in Portugal.

16 years.

You seriously prefer SA inc over the US...

There won't be a SA inc in 16 years or did you forget who is in control of this country?

Highly unlikely.

Also all the Americans you love so much are pumping their money into Africa so there's money to be made on both ends.

Guess this will just have to be one of those threads we have to come back to 16 years from now.

Prove me wrong that I have been calling long for ZAR and SA equities for the past year. You cannot as it happened. Being fearful does not help. You go to the US and I will stay with SA and reap the gains while you cry.

A year is a bit short. Like I said 16 years from today we will come back to this thread. I've bookmakered it in my calendar Wednesday, 12 January 2033

Put the money into your bond/debt. Or into a 30k tax savings free account.

They are? Federal bank indicating another interest rate hike in the near future; African countries going into a bit of a spin. Please tell us more?

I've worked for two American companies in a row now with a vast proportion of their internal resources sit ting here and beyond that so do a significant portion of our clients.

Beyond that have you not noticed Starbucks and Burger King and the like popping up everywhere?

Africa is booming. Everyone wants a piece of the pie and the Americans are well on track already.

The two governments having an influence on each other is a different side of the same coin.

So we should invest in American companies cause that's where the profits will go? Sounds like a good idea :)

But anyway, I would do my half/half JSE Top 40/50 and S&P500 thing, maybe 10% into local property and 10% international property funds.

Exactly that, play both sides of the field.

The money gets pushed into our economy and the profits also go back home.

You can win on both sides.

My primary objection was that there will be nothing in 16 years. That's a ridiculous view point and incredibly unlikely.
