I bought a game on Steam last week (Aliens vs. Predator) and started the download on Wednesday night, the download is still busy today and if I'm lucky will only be finished around tomorrow. So that's nearly a week :D

The download has become more of a "do it for the hell of seeing how long it will take rather than anything else"

So out of curiosity I was wondering if anyone else has had the patience to run such a download, and if so what's your record in hours or days?

My longest was 4 days - I streched it out so as not to look like a rogue downloader :D

Granted this was a MSDN download but still - and I still have to finish the last one

Mine was also a week (granted I'm on a 384 narrowband connection). It was Test Drive Unlimited 2, 15,5GB

What's your linespeed/connection and size of game? Admit this is some feat.

running iBurst, but have used up my cap so connection is throttled to 64kbps although during the day I get between 6 and 9 and about 40 at night. Game size is just over 17GB

This is part of the reason I wish steam would tell you how much you gonna need before you pay

This is part of the reason that Steam has forums dedicated to each title/franchise/IP.
Most all of them at some point in their forums will have mention of the actual DL size.

As a standard though, newer games on Steam have a pretty standard 1:2 compression ratio.
So if the game says "Requires 12GB Hard drive space"... you can almost certainly look at somewhere in the 6GB range.

There are however exceptions to that. It's just a generally safe estimate.

Desert Combat mod for BF1942 - One month on dial up :D.

Connecting on and off all the time.

AvP still downloading, 14.4 GB's done, 1 to go, so about 5 days and 15 hrs so far and counting

If I would have to download 15.5GB, It would take me 46 days, as I only have a 5GB package from Iburst and would have to wait for 2 mid month topups. :D

Hope portal 2 isn't to big.
