Looking at moving from Rain 5G to FTTH

Hi All,

I'm looking at moving away from rain 5G as fiber has been rolled out here, and I have been having loads of issues with Rain as of late.
Fiber available here is OpenServ and Metro,

The ISP's I have been looking at are CoolIdeas \ Afrihost and Mind The Speed.
Line: 200/100

I need to be able to connect to my home office, So no double natting and need to be able to port forward.

From what I have been able to read in the forums it looks like, CoolIdeas\Openserve is the way to go?

Any suggestions . ?
 
Look like you already have the answer.
 
Openserve/Cool Ideas.. there was a recent thread about a member having issues with afrihost and port forwarding due to NAT.. don't remember all the details and can't find the thread now..

We do not do any natting on Openserve and for other network we offer a public IP on request.

We are on of the most affordable ISPs on Openserve at R1117 for a 200/100 Uncapped, Unshaped and Unthrottled.

We provide you with a free router. You can collect it for free at the walk in or have it delivered for R249.

We have a standard R999 cancellation fee that applies if you cancel within 6 months. After that no other fees.

I still don't understand your R 249 delivery fee...

I think it's a standard delivery fee since we send the hardware with overnight express. The router is free and we won't ask for it back.

I have looked at other ISPs and R200-R300 seems the rate for delivery of hardware.

Why can some etailers overnight express deliveries for R 69..? Are ISP's not negotiating with couriers..?

CISP might be a little more expensive but in general latency is a bit better, e.g. someone i know constantly complains they get from CT 175ms to a Blizzard server where i am on CISP hit the server at 148ms. He know uses Warp VPN for gaming which gives him quite a bit better experience.

When we play Dota i hit the JHB server at 17ms he hits it at 22ms. Other than the slight increase in latency he has had pretty much same experience as me. Both lines are on Vumatel.

Those etailers are probably taking a loss (to sell the product and reclaim lost profit from the item) or use their own courier company. It's a cut throat market actually.

Source: I use courier companies quite often.

You don't have to take their router. You can use your own. Good luck getting a proper router for R249. They have to subsidize free hardware somehow. :unsure:

I would say dont take the router... Not my thread but found similar issues:

Afrihost: Please supply better "free" routers

This is an open letter to Afrihost: I think you're maybe shooting yourselves in the foot by supplying crappy free routers to your new fibre clients. The big disclaimer on this is that everything below isn't necessarily the objective truth (heck, maybe I missed some small print on your website...

If its anything like the crap I got a few years ago... Weeks of wifi problems, restarting, etc, thought it was openserve, but decided lets try an old router just incase - solid as a rock ever since! Fyi - It came with some dodgy Russian Yandex firmware, no thanks!

Save your R250 "courier fee" and put it into a better router!

We currently only supply the Huawei WS5200 router. The D-link has been discontinued for a good couple of months.

It also sounds like your D-link is faulty. Have you ever exchanged it for a new router?
 
If you're going to go fibre then you may as well save up for a proper router - with that I mean something in the price range of about R3-5k with proper QoS.

In the meantime, you can use whatever your ISP provides you, but it will be worth your while to upgrade the router at some point anyway.

Nothing against ISPs and their routers, they can only subsidise so much.

For most part the ISP provided routers are okay... It gets you up and running. That's the whole idea of the ```free``` router.
But yeah, don't expect to have full signal on the opposite side of your double storey house and then blame the ISP for supplying a 'crappy' router.... Most routers won't do it anyway.

Personally, I prefer a small business-like firewall/router without built-in WIFI and then run through a dedicated access point for wifi.
