Hi TV gurus

I'm looking for recommendations on a 46" FHD LCD TV. Budget is around R10K. So far I've found the following:

While the most expensive, the Sony has 100zigaHz motion thingy. Is this useful?
The Sinotec (never heard of them) is LED. Is LED *really* better than LCD?

Comments on these TVs? Anything else I should be looking at?

As an aside, I'll only be buying in April (so that the CPA is in effect), so any "only valid this Saturday" deals aren't meaningful.

Gaming (all platforms), PC use, Blu-ray, MKV rips, SD AVIs

I had the older Sinotec 42" FHD LCD and it was good.

I currently have the Samsung LA46C530 and its brilliant.... Not sure about the Sinotec LED though tbh.

46" EX500 no question.

Forget Sinotech, and LED is marketing gimmick, LED edge-lit LCD offers no picture quality improvement over CCFL LCD.

Heard the 46" Samsung 7 Series went down to R13,000 or so at Cats I think it was in Jo'burg?

Well, I would steer clear of the smaller and cheaper brands such as Sinotec etc.

LED is essentially still LCD, just utilizing LED's as a light source instead of a traditional back-light. Its arguable, but the picture quality is the same between the two technologys. In fact, LED's are prone to uneven lighting, since unless its a local-dimming LED (which the Sinotec isn't) the LED's are arranged along the side of the panels. This creates non-uniform lighting in some cases.

I would recommend the Sony, as the 100hz motionflow really does make a significant difference to the smoothness of the movement, particularly in fast paced sports or in long panning shots.

Just remember that most manufacturers will be releasing their 2011 ranges within the next few months, so that might be worth waiting for.

The plasma guys can advise you about the benefits of plasma TV's if you are interested :)

RE: CPA. I can't say exactly, but consensus in the work-place is to wait for it to be in effect before making large(ish) purchases. Waiting 1 week won't kill me so I may as well do that.

So the Sony seems to be the best recommendation. Thanks :)

Cruelty, I would've recommended the Samsung LA46C550 for R8899 at CatsDigital but Samsung after-sales service is non-existent.

PHILIPS TV 47" LCD 47PFL5609/98 - 1027108
R9999.99.

PHILIPS TV 47" LCD 47PFL3605/98 - 1031677
R9999.99

Do go on special.

Thanks for the warning. I checked a few places out over the weekend and the Sony seems to be the best in the price range (close enough anyway), so I'll stick with that choice.

Motion flow on a blu ray looks incredible so don't compromise on the Sony.

Motion flow should be switched off for BluRay's to preserve the "Movie look" else it looks like a soap opera shot with a HandyCam. For non 24p material, motion flow is quite important, so yes, make sure you get a 100Hz+ model.
