I have a bit of work I need done to my old E36 BMW 318is. It's a 1997 model and has about 240000 km on the clock. I need the following done:

  • Service (it needs one) :)
  • Drivers window keeps coming off the bracket
  • I need some work done on the front wheels. There is too much play which is preventing them from being aligned and wearing through the tyres like mad. They are toeing in when I brake. I think the bushes need to be replaced.
  • I also need someone to check the chain (doesn't have a cam belt) to see if it needs to be replaced
  • And a basic roadworthy check to make sure it passes.

There are some funnies on the electrics that I need to get sorted out later but they are not a crisis for now. The radio sometimes turns on by itself and radiator fan at the front gets stuck on. When this happens, I need to disconnect the battery everytime I stop otherwise the battery goes flat. This will happen for anything up to a couple of weeks and then it just stops. What can I say, it has character :)

Why all the text? I need a trustworthy person who I can use to do this and other stuff for me in the future. It's way out of motor plan and I have been burnt by a couple of small workshops. Does anyone know someone in Centurion or near Bryanston?

i suggest go for roadworty 1st and then get the stuff sorted

and budget 1st for alot cause you get like 2 weeks to sort out everything if you have to license it again

theres a guy i went to in centurion next to the battery centre close to the mall ...he was good and reasonable on a golf ...not sure on a bmw tho

The car is presently in my sisters name and I just want to transfer it to my name but there is no urgency on that side.

The other question, what is a lot? The car is maybe worth 15k so I need to take that into account before throwing wads of money at it :)

I previously went to Carnetics in Centurion and wasn't too happy afterwards. They are around that area. Will look to see who else is based there. Thanks.

i think thats the name of the place not sure ...i recall the guys name is duvall or something like that

well 1st get prices of parts and judge from there or think of maybe what is wrong and call up or visit a mechanic and ask for prices

cause from the sound of things if its an old car then you looking at alot more than expected if the things havnt been done

Hi Spidermonkey, sent you a PM regarding this.

Thanks for the feedback. Will try and do that. I tend to keep the car in pretty good nick and it feels like it's running fine with the exception of the problems listed so I am hopeful that it's not too expensive to get it sorted out.

My hassle with Carnetics is that I asked them to sort out the electrical problem with the fan. They replaced a fuse, 15 minutes after leaving, it started happening again. They then replaced all of the wiring in the car and 6 months later it came back again. I drove past and they don't have a battery place next door so it may be another place. Will look around a bit.

I am happy to pay reasonable rates for good service. It just seems to me that you don't get both so often these days. You can get good service but pay through your nose for it or you get lousy service and for reasonable rates. Quite often you even get charged high rates for lousy service.

Maybe I will go back to Carnetics again. With the CPA act, it's much tougher companies to get away with things now days.
