Unfortunately, one of the transformers in the town I live in got hit by lightning on Friday and we have to go through load-shedding until Eskom's technicians decide whether they can fix the transformer or whether a new one is required. I can't believe it takes them this long just to make that decision.

I'm looking to get a generator for my house and since I don't know much about a generator, I'd rather ask the people on MyBB. I'm thinking a 5.5kva would probably be best to run most things in my house (geyser and oven excluded). Can anyone point me in the right direction, please?

Bundu power. They deal in the stuff and can possibly offer you expert advice.

You don't just run a house off of a generator unfortunately.

Getting a generator and plugging things into it directly is your best budget bet. Else you will be spending 3-4x as much when talking about wiring it into the house.

Even if you do it yourself, generators with 2 phase (so both live and neutral are hot in respect to ground) are not legal and most certainly not safe to wire into your house and the kind that actually has a neutral and ground at the same potential cost far more.

Last thing you want is to get electrocuted when a plug is turned off. Our plugs, lights, etc. only disconnect the live wire, if your neutral is also hot, you can get electrocuted from something that is turned off.

PM me. I have a 7.5KVA that I’m willing to sell. The original plan was integrating it into the DB box, but due to circumstances changing (read, emigrating), I won’t need it.
