Hi folks

I'm wanting to get my young son a cell phone, but I don't want a smartphone. Looking for something cheap.

Requirements are to make and receive calls and SMS messages, and must also have Whatsapp and be WiFi capable.
I want to prevent him from surfing the net and watching U-Tube and the likes, (he can do that at home on the laptop under our supervision)
So a phone that can SMS and Whatsapp and connect to WiFi without anything else would be perfect. Are there any phones that are like such?

I don't have a budget per se, but definitely would like something cheap - under R 500.00 would be good. No contracts.

Recommendations will be appreciated.

There are launchers that reduce the functionality of the phone. Just go to the play store and type in Kids Launcher. There are also the likes of Big launcher that are designed for old people but also give limited functionality so they can't mess the phone up.

So you are not limited to a feature phone or even a new phone. I doubt that you would need anything powerful to run SMS and IM. maybe a good battery so that you can constantly run location as a tracker.

Hi, Nokia 8110, should be available next month or September.

Will soon have WhatsApp capabilities but definitely won't be R500, unfortunately.

Thanks all for the feedback and advice.
Looks like I should be getting one of those Vodacom "Kicka" items, and removing some apps, then installing a Kid Launcher or Big Launcher app.
Appears to then meet all the requirements perfectly.
