Looking for a free video conversion tool - MPEG to AVI?

Hiya guys,

Got a video of a track day I took part in - mounted by video camera on the dash. Its 1.4GB and I tried to use Windows Movie Maker to edit it etc, add music and all the rest. Cant even import it due to the file type being MPEG, gives an error.

Searched the net and it seems there is a problem with importing MPEG files and Windows Movie Maker. So Im looking for a good free MPEG to AVI converter. Any recommendations? Searched the net...but you never know if a product really is good or not...so hoping someone can steer me in the right direction.

I use WinFF which uses the briliant ffmpeg as its converter.

miro, super, mediacoder.
i'm not sure about transcoding to avi.
rather just convert to wmv - less codec issues imo.
