Hi folks,

My old laptop is due for replacement. I also want a gaming rig. So, I've decided that I only want to spend money once and get a laptop that can double as a decent machine for both gaming and work.

Here's what I want: i7, 16 GB of RAM, 6GB GTX 1060, and at least 1 TB HDD. SSD would be nice, but not a show stopper.

The options, that I can think of are the ASUS RoG machines, MSI, and Lenovo's Legion machines. Not sure which is best. I'm also trying to stick to a R20K-ish budget, which I know is optimistic, but I'm hoping something good comes up on Black Friday.

Any suggestions on the specs/manufactures that I have in mind? Any retailers to consider/avoid?

Cheers.

Keep an eye out on the hardware classifieds forum here specifically for Flashgear's deals. I also had to get a new gaming laptop earlier this year and only had a budget of 12K. Got a great machine for that (second hand but in prime condition). I would highly recommend, especially if you are not very rushed and can wait for a good deal. I think there may be a good deal or two on now.

He mainly sells Dell which for me is the best brand in terms of reliability and quality.

I've also been looking at a new laptop for work. The only one that falls into my budget is the Asus FX553VD-DM547T i7.

Intel Core i7 7700HQ
16GB RAM
1TB HDD
128 GB SSD
GTX1050 4GB

Price at around R17000

My current laptop is a Dell that I bought sometime around the end of 2011. Apart from battery issues and a single drive replacement under warranty, it's still almost as good as new. I love Dell machines - brilliant build quality!

I agree with this

Alas, I wasn't able to get what I wanted on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Luckily, I'm not in a rush.

Any thoughts on the HP Omen machines?

Thanks!

I thought that I could fit a laptop into a R20K budget, but if I want 16GB of RAM and a GTX 1060, it looks like I might have to up the budget to R25k or so. Which of course, begs the question... should I rather drop R20k on a decent desktop for gaming and R5k on a sufficient laptop for work. I'm starting to think that I'll get more value for money if I go that route.

Decisions, decisions.
