Hi Guys,

I am looking at getting a decent camera (that wont rape my pocket) which I can do Sunrise/sunset Time lapses with.

Some local ones:

I've just gone to a local camera shop and they have recommended I get a EOS 650 (R9000) with a 10-24mm lens(R6900)

But they are just checking for a intervalometer that would be compatible with the camera, as the canon one is only compatible with a 7D (R14000)

Can anyone with any exerience in time lapse give me any insight as to what they use in their setups?

Cheers

most cannons you can load with custom firmware to introduce time lap features. try searching for custom firmware for the canon model you are interested in buying.

I do not know the Canon range all that well, but you can get a remote shutter release for most DSLRs. If you are handy, you can hack that onto any old timer, and you've got time lapse.

You can also drive most cameras from a USB cable, so you can easily drive time-lapse from a PC (in theory).
I would be very surprised if you cannot drive the camera from an Android phone.

The best option has already been suggested, though: firmware hack.

The Nikon D5200 also has an intervalometer, but SA pricing has not been announced yet, I think. It should go for about $800, so it will be in between 650 and 7D pricing, but probably not over R10k for body only. (And the D5200 has better dynamic range, which is rather important for sunrise/sunset shots)

I call a bit of BS on that "compatible" thing - even the local Kodak store stocks intervalometers - usually the more pricey Hagnel Giga-T Pro range of things (wireless intervalometer). I picked up a nice little one (can do infinite shutter counts or specific amounts with delays etc) from Amazon I think - for not much - couple of hundred rand. Well under the R900 for the wireless Giga or even the Canon one.

Warranted I have not used it much - but it is fun .. I've played a couple of times.

As for camera equipment - well there are loads of things you could use - and loads of methods to do day/night (sunrise/sunset) sequences. I'd almost say - get a OK SLR - use the kit lens, play, learn and then decide where you want to spend money - super fast lens, super wide lens etc.
